Shattering The Box

I created this slide show for my sister Jen of http://www.jaelcustomdesigns.com when she was chosen to be a speaker at the May 2012 Triangle Tweet Up/ Mini Ignite Durham event. It highlights some of what I feel are the must have behaviors to truly gain a following in social media. I hope you enjoy! Please feel free to give me feedback, lets create some great dialog.

Shattering The Box

  1. 1. “Shattering the box” @JaelDesignsInc
  2. 2. “Shattering the box” @JaelDesignsInc
  3. 3. Social Media Must Haves To Shatter The Box These Items Are Key • Whatever you do, do it with Passion • Get out of your comfort zone • Enjoy what you do • Add Value
  4. 4. PASSION Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic and faithful, and you will accomplish your object. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Philosopher If there is no passion in your life, then have you really lived? Find your passion, whatever it may be. Become it, and let it become you and you will find great things happen FOR you, TO you and BECAUSE of you.” – T. Alan Armstrong, Author and Writer
  5. 5. PASSION Talk about something you love, what your strengths are, hone in on your skills and share it with others. Be the original you. Don’t worry about what everybody thinks because everything isn’t for everyone!
  6. 6. This is a NO COMFORT ZONE, zone!
  7. 7. Get Out of Your Comfort ZONE •Build relationships •Network •Engage, engage, engage..... •Be a clique breaker (high school is over)
  8. 8. Build Relationships How many times have you ignored an @ because you didn’t know the individual? Happens all the time....part of building an audience means that you have to speak to them too! It’s more than just listening to what you have to say.
  9. 9. Network You would be so surprised by how many contacts you can develop by just reaching out to someone. 6 degrees of separation becomes 3 and then 2....
  10. 10. Engage, engage, engage! Whatever your context whether you want to start a war, a dynamic dialogue, build a system, or propose a project it’s important to make those connections with your audience and their audience...you have a far greater reach when you step outside your box!
  11. 11. Break the Cliques! If we’ve been friends since sixth grade what more can we talk about on twitter that we don’t already know! Speak to new people you can always learn something!
  12. 12. My apologies if the message seems redundant but I can’t stress it enough. I truly believe in talking to people.
  13. 13. Enjoy What You Do!
  14. 14. Enjoyment is necessary! Too much PREP TIME & little GAME TIME lead to a very poor quality of “social butterfly-ness”. We all hear these terms Social Media Maven, Social Butterfly, Social Guru. Well if your bogged down by SEO, ROI, MLM, SLM and any other acronym you can chain together for analytics you are missing the entire game and the actual results.
  15. 15. VALUE • Why should people follow, friend request, like, circle you or read your blog? • What does your audience get from all of this activity, what value have you created for them?
  16. 16. VALUE I engage, answer questions, build relationships and empathize with my audience. I've seen far more ROI than not by doing these things, not because I have to and it's a formula but, because I genuinely want to. It's in my nature to be social! If someone has a question or problem and it's asked on a public forum, I'll try to help figure it out or point them in the right direction. As an entrepreneur on Twitter & Facebook everyone is a potential client. You have to learn what  their needs are and show interest in helping them reach their goal and if you offer what they are looking for more often than not they'll come to you and you  have an additional client. I also share and advocate for other people! through facebook shares and retweets! Engage, Review, Retweet & Repeat! At the end of the day, you want people to remember you! Stand out, don't blend in!
