  • Welcome to the Module 8 Review Session! In this module you learned how to form the future tense, use the verb gustar and vocabulary related to art, the theatre and movies.
  • First, let’s take a look at the future tense. Up until now we’ve used ir + a + infinitive to express future actions. In this module, however, you learned a new way speak about future actions. For example, before we could say “Voy a escuchar la música.” but now we will say “Escucharé la música.”
  • Here you can see the new endings. The good news is that endings are the same for –ar, -er and –ir verbs! Just remember not to drop the –ar, -er or –ir. Instead, simply add the ending to the infinitive. Make sure that you include the accent mark on every form except nosotros! Here we have comer as an example. Listen carefully to the pronunciation…
  • It’s time for you to try! We’ll do the first one together. First, you have to figure out the infinitive form of the verb. It’s “mirar.” Now figure out who the subject is and match it to the appropriate ending. The subject is nosotros so the ending is –emos. So mirar plus –emos = miraremos. Now pause the presentation and write down your answers for #2-5.
  • It’s time to check your answers! #2 is escuchar plus the ellos ending, escucharán. #3 is comer plus the yo ending, comeré. #4 is comer plus the tú ending, comerás. #5 is a little tricky. The infinitive is ir plus the él/ella ending, irá. How did you do? Did you remember the accent marks?
  • As we’ve seen in other tenses and as you may have expected, some verbs are irregular in the future tense. Please go to the 8.06 Estructuras tab and study the irregular forms. They can be grouped into categories according to their irregular spellings.
  • Now it’s time to talk about the verb gustar. In English, we do the action of liking a person or thing. In Spanish, the object or person does the action of pleasing us. First, then, choose the indirect object pronoun to tell whom is being pleased. It it pleases me, use the pronoun me, … The second step is to conjugate gustar for who or what is pleasing that person. It will either be gustA if one thing is pleasing or gustAN if more tha one thing is pleasing. Take a look at these examples…
  • Now you try! We’ll do the first two together. For #1 since Maria is being pleased, we use the pronoun le. Since zapatos is plural, we use gustAN. For #2 since we are being pleased, we use the pronoun nos. Since casa is singular, we use gustA. Now pause the presentation and write down your answers for the remaining questions.
  • It’s time to check your answers! …. How did you do?
  • Finally, we have some vocabulary practice. Take a look at #1… That’s it, good work! If you have any questions, please contact your instructor or attend one of our open office hour sessions. Thank you for watching this presentation and buena suerte en el examen!

    1. 1. Until now, to express the future tense, we’ve used:ir + a + infinitive. Voy a escuchar la música. I am going to listen to music. Pedro va a pintar un mural. Pedro is going to paint a mural. Vamos a ver una obra de teatro. We are going to see a work of art.In this module, we have a set of endings that let us express whatsomeone will do. Escucharé la música. I will listen to music. Pedro pintará un mural. Pedro will paint a mural. Veremos una obra de teatro. We will see a work of art.
    2. 2. Study the following future tense forms of comer: yo comeré Nosotros comeremos tú comerás Vosotros comeréis él, ella, Ud. comerá ellos, ellas, Uds. comeránHere’s the good news:The above endings work with most –ar, -er and –ir verbs. All three types have the SAME ending!Just remember:Instead of dropping the ar, er, or ir from the verb, you simply ADDthe ending to the infinitive (for most verbs).There are accents in every form EXCEPT for nosotros.They are extremely important!
