Oklahoma CyberKnife: Lung Cancer Awareness

Download to read offline

As the second-most common cancer in both men and women, lung cancer is responsible for the majority of cancer-related deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates more than 160,000 people will lose their battle with lung cancer this year, accounting for more victims than breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancers combined.

In recognition of National Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, Oklahoma CyberKnife encourages local residents to take preventive steps to protect themselves and their loved ones from common and lesser-known causes of lung cancer.

  5. 5. Lung Cancer Treatment Options Surgery: Some patients have small tumors that can be removed surgically, but they may suffer from other medical problems that prevent them from being surgical candidates or they may be opposed to surgery. In these cases, important treatment options like CyberKnife® offer an alternative. External-Beam Radiation Therapy: For patients who cannot tolerate surgery, external-beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is an option, although this treatment can be lengthy and difficult for some patients to endure. EBRT delivers focused radiation to a tumor but also encompasses a large margin of normal tissue. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy: Stereotactic radiosurgery systems like the CyberKnife® can offer effective treatment of lung tumors while carrying a low risk of side effects. Treatment is noninvasive, spares healthy tissue and typically involves three to five outpatient procedures. 6802 South Olympia Ave Suite G100 Tulsa, OK 74132 (918) 949-6676 www.oklahomack.com
