2017 OHIO YAB Meeting Dates
8. Letters in Support of the Fostering
Stable Housing Opportunities Act
If passed into law, this Act would:
• Allow foster care youth who are at risk of "aging out" of
foster care to apply for housing assistance when they reach
16 years old
• Allow them to jump to the front of the waitlist when they
are about to "age out" of foster care
12. 2016 October Elections
• Nominees are required to sign and agree to the
OHIO YAB Code of Conduct.
• Elections will be held for the positions of President, Vice
President, Secretary, Media Spokesperson, Treasurer and
Parliamentarian.
• Officers will take office at the January OHIO YAB Officers
Retreat. First runners-up (“Officers-in-Training”) will be
invited to attend as well.
• Elected Officers and Officers-in-Training are required to
commit to participate in monthly calls.
13. Voting Reminders
Process:
• Youth who are interested in serving
as an officer give a speech
• Decisions are made via secret ballot
• Only YOUTH vote
Vitally important:
• Votes should NOT be based on popularity, or
choosing youth from your own county
14. Duties of the President
• Must be elected for good
leadership skills.
• Knows what work has to be
done and when to delegate it.
• Keeps informed of member’s
progress and sees that the
board is always moving forward.
15. Duties of the Vice President
• Presides at meetings and
other functions in the
absence of the president.
• Must be well informed of
the issues and skilled in
handling the board’s
business.
• Must be prepared to
assume the office of
President when necessary.
16. Duties of the Media
Spokesperson
• Gathers news about the board and gets it out to the public.
• Includes the “who, what, when, where, why and how,” and a
description of the activity and how it impacts the community.
17. Duties of the Secretary
• Keeps all board records
for continuous reference
to all that has happened.
• Takes minutes on
statewide quarterly
meetings, officer calls,
and officer retreats.
18. Duties of the Parliamentarian
The Referee of Youth Advocacy:
• Makes sure that they begin and end
on time and that they follow the
order of business.
• Conducts meetings following the
correct procedure and allows ample
but not excessive time for discussion.
• Brings issues to a satisfactory
conclusion when sensing a discussion
is dragging or being monopolized.
19. Duties of the Treasurer
• Keeps record of all board funds.
• Assists in developing the annual budget for the
board.
• Maintains accurate records of income and
expenses.
