  5. 5. © Operational Excellence Consulting. All rights reserved. 5 About ISO • Developed more than 18,000 standards for all dimensions of sustainable development: economic, environmental and societal  Examples :  ISO 9001 – Quality Management Systems (QMS)  ISO 14001 – Environmental Management Systems (EMS)  ISO 27001 – Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) • American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is U.S. representative to ISO
  6. 6. © Operational Excellence Consulting. All rights reserved. 6 What is ISO 50001? • ISO 50001:2011 is the new standard for implementing a robust Energy Management System (EnMS) • It establishes an international framework for industrial plants or entire companies to manage all aspects of energy, including procurement and use
  7. 7. © Operational Excellence Consulting. All rights reserved. 7 Where Did ISO 50001 Come From? • In April 2007, UNIDO requested ISO to develop an international standard for EnMS • Participation by experts from the national standards bodies of 44 ISO member countries • Incorporation of best practices from various countries such as USA, European Union, Sweden, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, etc. • ISO 50001 was published in June 2011
  8. 8. © Operational Excellence Consulting. All rights reserved. 8 How Does ISO 50001 Work? • Identifies what requirements you must meet • Does not identify how you meet the requirements • Every Energy Management System is unique • Allows for flexibility • Allows management to ‘stay in the driving seat’
  9. 9. © Operational Excellence Consulting. All rights reserved. 9 ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 • ISO 50001 focuses on energy performance improvement, while ISO 14001 addresses all significant environmental impacts of an organization • Both standards can be implemented individually or they can be integrated with each other, or with any other ISO management system standards • If energy is an organization’s most significant environmental impact, ISO 50001 might be more appropriate than ISO 14001
