PRO TECH (Professional Training for technicians in pest control)1.Background :The insects and other organisms inhabitating with human and creating annoyanceto him can be termed as household pests. Many of the household pests arecosmopolitan in distribution like housefly ,mosquitoes, cockroaches, termites,rodents etc, Some of these pests, besides causing annoyance and discomfort toman, also transmit diseases such as, Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Plague,Cholera, Food poisoning etc. Being a tropical country, India has very conduciveenvironment for the fast growth and development of all these household pests.Pest Control in India is a service industry. Operations or treatment are carried outby persons/technicians who have no basic knowledge about pests, managementtechniques and without caring for their health and safety of others. It is anunorganized sector where no licensing or approval is necessary from Govt. in spiteof health and safety issues involved.The skill development at present is taking place mostly in an informal way. Suchpersons do not have a formal certificate and thus earn lower wages and areexploited by employers. They have come through informal system due to socioeconomic circumstances of the family and the compulsions of earning a livelihoodrather than attending a formal course.It is estimated that only 4000 pest control operators are recognized out of 25,000 inthe field with technicians strength of around 2.5 lakhs. Apart from this unemployedyouth in rural areas (who have a background of farming) can be trained to becomea certified pest control technician.Insecticides Act,1968 and rules framed there under clearly specifies in ChapterVIII , the need for providing protective clothing, equipments and suitable training inobserving safety precautions and handling safety equipments provided totechnicians . Training will instill confidence in the mind of the service professionalwhich will reflect in the work they carry out and they will benefit the organization.Food Safety and Standards Act ,2006 emphasizes only trained technicians shouldundertake pest control operations in food business establishment adoptingIntegrated Pest Management concepts for a safe environment.
  2. 2. 2.Objectives of the programme: To raise the status and standards of pest control technicians through education and training . To instill confidence in the mind of technicians to carry out the work in an efficient manner to satisfy the customer. To follow eco friendly technologies and safe working practices.3. Target group , Age and Qualification: Pest control Technicians , Supervisors who are already working in pest control service companies , and unemployed youth in rural areas. 18 years and above. 10th standard 4. Duration of the programme: 36 hours for Pro –Tech course No.of trainees per batch – 10, Expected trainees – on job -300 /year, Unemployed– 200/year. No. of batches planned – 50 batches in a year. 5. Methodology of training : The training methods used would be appropriate to the development of competencies. The focus of the programme is on professional approach in service delivery, knowing the basics of the subjects. Lecturing will be restricted to the minimum necessary and emphasis to be given on hands on training. Theory sessions –8 hrs – Audio visual aids , group discussions, subjects handled by qualified, experienced trainers in respective fields. Practical sessions – 12 hrs – Inspection techniques, Live demo- spray solution preparation, spraying techniques, maintenance of sprayers, fogging machines. – First aid measures, use of Personal Protection Equipments in association with chemical manufacturing companies, sprayer distributors, experienced Technicians/Managers.
  3. 3. 6.Training programme - Course outline.  Importance of training , Introduction to Integrated Pest Management concepts, Major household pests – Biology, Life cycle, health implications, damages caused and management techniques.  Judicious usage of pest control products.  Health and Safety aspects to be followed.  Personal grooming.  Documentation – Service reports writing.7. Location:PESPRO Training Hall,Plot no.13, II Floor, Customs Colony Main Rd,Okkiyam Thorapakkam, Chennai , 600097.Facilities available:Fully air conditioned training hall, accommodating 20 trainees at a time with multimedia projector and white board. Dining hall which can accommodate 20 personsat a time.8. Core competencies to be imparted:  Concept of Integrated Pest Management, Major household pests – Mosquitoes, Rats, Flies, Cockroaches, Termites, - Biology, Life cycle, health implications, damages caused inspection and management techniques with least preference to chemicals.  To study the importance of various products used to manage pests – pesticides approved for household purpose – label standards, good application techniques, monitoring devices – Glue pads, Fly Insect Catching Systems, Swatter bats, Rodent repellers etc.  To study and follow health and safety aspects – Handling, storage and transportation of pesticides, do’s and don’ts, safety tips, Personal Protection Equipments, safe handling and maintainence of sprayers and fogging machines, First aid measures, Material Safety Data Sheets and their use.  Good grooming standards for an ideal technician, responsibility and accountability  Documentation – Reports used in operations.

  5. 5. 10. Assessment :Self assessment by PESPRO – Written test of quiz type on the topics covered thatday for 5 days with 10 marks /day, total marks – 50. Minimum pass mark will be40/50 ie.80%.11. Certificate:Course completion certificate issued by IGNOU based on the recommendation ofPESPRO.12. Supply of reference materials:Trainees will be supplied with 1. Safety handbook –which includes first aidmeasures, attending poisoning cases. 2. Reference manual (biology of pests,inspection techniques, IPM strategies, Approved Pesticides / Products list, dosageand usage, Equipments handling), 3.
