  1. 1. 2010 This PowerPoint has been designed to inform about health and safety within Bridgwater College. Use the arrows below to go through the PowerPoint slides and then follow the instructions on the last page to access the test

Health & Safety Policy I am Mark Fitzmaurice and I am the Health and Safety Manager at Bridgwater College, I am responsible for writing the Health and Safety Policy which is also endorsed by the Health and Safety Committee.   3. 3. What are your responsibilities? You have a legal duty to take reasonable care of your health, safety and welfare As well as those who may be affected by your activities Ouch!

You have responsibilities for: • observing health & safety codes of practice and legislation within the health and safety policy and safety file within your area. • ensuring students and other people in your care do likewise • reporting any unsafe practice, equipment or facilities to your line manager/supervisor

  6. 6. Approve College Policy and arrangements for its implementation, observance and monitoring
  7. 7. Responsible for ensuring that within their particular area of control:- Codes of Practice are published; Applicable legislation is complied with; Regular inspections take place; Training of staff is arranged; Training of students takes place; All equipment and buildings comply with; Legislative requirements; Relevant publications are held and brought to the attention of staff and students.
  8. 8. Responsible for the Management of College Policy and arrangements for its implementation, observance and monitoring
  9. 9. Arranging regular safety inspections; Disseminating pertinent information relating to health & safety.
  10. 10. Producing codes of practice for their area of responsibility; Day to day supervision of all staff and students in their area to ensure health and safety requirements are observed; Day to day supervision of all equipment and buildings in their area; Disseminating pertinent information relating to health and safety; Identifying staff training needs; Ensuring all student schemes of work contain necessary health and safety instructions.

Observing health and safety codes of practice; Observing health and safety legislation; Ensuring students in their care do likewise; Reporting any unsafe practice, equipment or facilities to their line manager/supervisor; Teaching good health and safety practice to their students and ensuring it is written into schemes of work; Attending training as required by their line managers/supervisor and requesting it when needed; Reading and keeping up to date with relevant literature.

First Aid – Should you need a first aider you should contact main reception as your first point of call, if they are unavailable then follow the order of priority below: 1.Main Reception 2.College Support Team (either direct or via reception) 3.Senior Management Team 4.College Management Team 5.College Health Advisor 6.Health and Safety Manager

  14. 14. Fire Wardens Fire Wardens are tasked to ensure that everyone is evacuated from a building in the event of a fire alarm. They will: check rooms, offices, toilets, stairways and other internal areas to ensure full evacuation or give notification to fire crews of individuals who need to be rescued or helped from the building. Everybody out! There are designated refuse areas for people who cannot use the stairs
  15. 15. In addition as a member of staff you will need to check people are clear from your area as you go to your fire assembly point, you must then report to the fire warden. The college sites are divided into separate fire zones each with a specific assembly point and fire alarm.

FIRE NOTICE On hearing the Fire Alarm - A) Ensure that all students, visitors and staff leave the premises by the nearest escape route and are directed to the Zone A Assembly Point as shown on the Evacuation Drill Plan. B) Close all doors and windows where possible and turn off gas and electrical supplies. C) ON NO ACCOUNT USE THE LIFT. Persons normally using the lift must use the Fire Refuges in the protective stairwells on the 1 and 2 floor of the Derek Gibson Wing. Rooms D2, D27 and E20. D) Re-assemble at the Zone A Assembly Points and immediately take account of all present and notify the Supervisory Officers that the Zone is clear or if any persons are in the fire refuge or missing and thought to be still in the building. NO ONE SHOULD RE-ENTER THE BUILDING UNTIL A PERSON IN AUTHORITY HAS GIVEN THE ALL-CLEAR TO DO SO. On discovering a fire: 1 Sound the alarm by operating the nearest fire alarm call point. 2 Call the Fire Brigade by - i) contacting the College Switchboard and requesting the Operator to call the Emergency Services. ii) using the nearest telephone and dialling 999 for the Emergency Services. Giving this address: EVACUATION PROCEDURE YOU ARE IN ZONE A REPORT TO ASSEMBLY POINT A Address: Bridgwater College, Zone A College way, Bath Road, Bridgwater This is an example of a fire Notice which can be found in every room, it shows you where the fire assembly point is for that particular room.

  20. 20. Safeguarding Individuals The need to protect children, young people and vulnerable adults who attend Bridgwater College is the highest priority.
  21. 21. Safeguarding As a member of staff you have a duty to: • recognise • respond • record and • report The categories of abuse are: physical, emotional, sexual and neglect. Abuse may present itself in the form of e- bullying or e-abuse. You should report any concerns to the Senior Tutor Team or if not available to the Nominated Person Mark Nettle (Head of Student Services)

  23. 23. Driving All staff who drive their own vehicle, a college car or a minibus for work use, must drive in accordance with their driving licence and motor insurance policy and the law. Mileage expenses may be claimed for approved journeys made in a personal car There are separate arrangements for using college vehicles. All staff who claim mileage expenses must take responsibility for the road worthiness of the vehicle they are driving and may be asked to produce: comprehensive car insurance with business use a full car driving licence MOT certificate (for cars more than 3 years old) To view the Driving Policy click here
  25. 25. Safe Learner Blue Print Learning and working must take place in a healthy, safe and supportive environment. All staff who supervise learners including tutors, instructors and mentors have a direct role in the transfer of health and safety knowledge and can influence the behaviour of the learner with regards to safe working practices.
