  1. 2. INTRODUCTION <ul><li>Panchakarma is Ayurveda's primary purification and detoxification treatment. Panchakarma means the &quot;five therapies&quot;. These 5  therapeutic means of eliminating toxins from the body are Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti and Raktamoskshana. This series of five therapies help remove deep rooted stress and illness causing toxins from the body while balancing the doshas  (energies that govern all biological functions). </li></ul>

PROCEDURE <ul><li>Warm ¼ cup of oil to slightly above body temp place a small amount of oil on the finger tips and palms and begin to massage, using the open part of the hand rather than the fingertips. Start with the head. Apply oil directly to the scalp and then cover the entire scalp with small circular strokes. </li></ul><ul><li>Next apply oil gently to face and outer part of ears. </li></ul><ul><li>Massage both the front and back of the neck, and the upper part of the spine. </li></ul><ul><li>Apply a small amount of oil to entire body and then proceed with the massage to each area of the body </li></ul><ul><li>Massage arms with back and forth motion over long bones </li></ul>
  8. 9. <ul><li>Put oil on chest and abdomen , over the abdomen, use a gentle circular clockwise motion, and over the breast bone, a straight up and down motion. </li></ul><ul><li>Massage the back and spine </li></ul><ul><li>Massage the legs use a back and forth motion over the long bones and circular over the joints. </li></ul><ul><li>Lastly, massage the bottom of the feet. The feet are especially important, and more time should be spent here than on other parts of the body. Use the open part of your hand and massage vigorously back and forth over the soles of the feet. </li></ul><ul><li>Shower or bathe with warm, not hot water and a mild soap. This will keep a small undetectable film of oil on the body even after the bath. This is very beneficial. </li></ul>

PROCEDURE <ul><li>A paste of black gram flour is applied around the eyes and warm medicated oil or ghee is poured inside in such a way that the entire eye is submerged in the medication for some time. The duration for this procedure is adjusted according to the severity of the condition. After a specified time, the medicine is drained out, the surrounding paste is removed, and the eyes are cleaned. </li></ul>

  44. 45. PROCEDURE <ul><li>A leather cap should be tied on the patients forehead with the help of cotton cloth belt. Then the paste of the black gram powder is pasted between the cap and the head.. The medicated luke warm oil is kept over the head. The level of the fluid should be about three and half inch from the scalp. The temperature of the oil should be maintained. The oil shouldnot be too hot or too cold. </li></ul>
  45. 46. Duration: <ul><li>The duration of shirovasti depends upon the condition of the patient. Generally it is given for 30-40 minutes . </li></ul>

If long, the hair should be cut to shout. </li></ul><ul><li>The leather cap should be tight so that there is no leakage of any fluid during the treatment. </li></ul><ul><li>The fluid poured in the leather cap should not be too cold or too warm. </li></ul><ul><li>The temperature of the fluid should be maintained. </li></ul>
