Sample Conceptual Framework on "Effects of Aromatherapy on the Pruritus of Clients Undergoing Hemodialysis"
Conceptual Framework
According to the aforementioned nursing theory by Florence Nightingale, nurses need to manipulate or to utilize the environment to assist the clients towards optimal health.
The current study was related in a way that the researcher who conducted the experiment induced changes in a client’s environment. Clients who undergo hemodialysis who claimed that they experience pruritus were the subject of the study. The researcher wanted to test the effect of aromatherapy massage on the perceived sensation of pruritus as this symptom may be so distressing for the affected clients.
Lavender essential oil added in a lotion emits fragrance and at the same time gets absorbed in the skin to relieve pruritus. The researcher has also considered the temperature of the essential oil. It has been ensured to be at room temperature. The room was kept warm (at least 21-22 degrees Celsius). Rubbing of hands before touching clients’ skin was also observed. These increase peripheral blood circulation and enhance the penetration and absorption of essential oils.
By altering the environment of the qualified respondents, the researcher sought to induce comfort or relieve pruritus, thus providing comfort to the clients.
The researcher had constructed the following figure to represent the relationship among the variables used in the current study.

Randomly selected experimental group:Characteristic profile of the respondents:-Age-Gender-Duration of hemodialysisTreatment:Massage w/ essential oilEssential oil is at room temperatureRoom temperature of 21-22 degrees CelsiusKeep hands warm before touching client’s skinSensation of pruritus:SeverityLocationFrequency
