At some point in our lives we have all asked the question "What is the purpose of school? Why
must I learn this?". Some say school is simply preparation for employment and for the rest of our
lives. I enjoy school; however, I have always found it to be rather difficult and pointless being in
the French immersion stream and this was due to the lack of help I received from my mother and
father unlike many of my peers whose parents attended university and spoke both English and

Professionals begin by determining a problem and focus area. For example, problems that may
require improvement may involve the school setting, curriculum, student academic progress, or
instruction. School professionals must then describe the elements entailed in that area of focus,
develop questions, describe intervention or modification implementations, produce timelines for
implementation of interventions or modifications, identify the participants of the action research
group, and provide a list of resources to put the plan into action. The individuals implementing the
action research must then describe the data that will be gathered, develop a plan for data collection
and analyses, choose the appropriate instruments for analysis, implement the plan, and record the
results (Donato, 2003). Although an individual teacher can conduct these research studies, it is
common for groups of teachers in the school setting to work with other teachers, as well as

The purpose of public school education is to provide students with the tools and skills to continue to
higher education, and to help them pursue their goals and dreams in life. It is meant to provide
inspiring, positive and culturally affirming experiences that make students excited to learn and
succeed. While many students are prepared properly in public schools, this is not true for all. For
several students, education is not stimulating, and is dull and boring, or perhaps provides negative
and detrimental experiences. Recognizing that there are flaws in the public school system is the first
step to making positive changes in the system. A proper education is crucial a competitive society
such as this one. Public education must provide for all children equally in order to to prepare them
to control their own fate later on in life. Unfortunately, due to the inability to incorporate a
multicultural curriculum, many times only students of the dominant culture are given a full and
comprehensive education, while students of subdominant cultures and different backgrounds are left
behind. This sets them back significantly, making it harder for them to compete in this society no
matter how hard they work. While it is impossible for a single person to make the significant
changes necessary to the institution of public education, if all government officials, administrators,
teachers, parents, and students come together, significant changes can be made in a positive

The purpose of school is to teach us how to make it in the real world. We are supposed to learn
how to function and essentially grow up. We learn to write our names and to read. We learn to
stand in straight lines and raise our hand if we have something to say. We learn that one plus one
equals two and we memorize the multiplication table. We learn that cells make up all living things
and what photosynthesis is. We learn state capitals and even state birds. We learn about wars and
battles of our world's past. We learn to write in complete sentences and that a haiku is a poem
written in five, seven, five syllable count. To be honest I don't remember most of what I was taught in
school. I can't recite the Gettysburg address or all the names of our presidents. I don't remember
how to find the area of a square or the angels of a triangle. What I do remember are the lessons I
learned without realizing I was being taught. I learned that life is full of embarrassing moments, peer
pressure can affect anyone and our relationships with other people influence who we are.
