Norwich Public Schools Expectations for Mathematics Academic Vocabulary Instruction: • At least ONE strategy must be actively present as a focus in each math unit of instruction. • Choice of strategy should vary from unit to unit to allow students to build a repertoire of strategies over the course of the school year. • Consistent teacher modeling of academic, formal mathematical vocabulary in instruction and classroom conversation (page 6). • Elements for Scaffolding Formal Mathematical Vocabulary (page 7) evident in the classroom environment. • Math Academic Vocabulary Word Cards posted in the classroom and actively used during instruction (ACTIVE Word Wall) • Math Vocabulary Word cards rotated with each unit.

Lessons should be guided by a series of purposeful and deliberate questioning techniques
