One day in the farmhouse, Dorothyand Toto are caught up in acyclone and deposited in the fieldin Munchkin Country, the easternpart of the Land of Oz. The fallinghouse kills the evil ruler of theMunchkins, the Wicked Witch ofthe East.
The Good Witch of the North comeswith the Munchkins to greet Dorothyand gives her the silver shoes that theWicked Witch had been wearing whenshe was killed. In order to return toKansas, the Good Witch of the Northtells Dorothy that she will have to go tothe Emerald City and ask the Wizard ofOz to help her.
On her way down the road of yellowbricks, Dorothy frees the Scarecrowfrom the pole he is hanging on,restores the movements of the rustedTin Woodman with an oil can, andencourages the Cowardly Lion tojourney with her and Toto to theEmerald City.
When the travelers arrive at theEmerald City, they are asked to weargreen spectacles by the Guardian ofthe Gates as long as they remain in thecity. The four are the first to evermeet with the Wizard. When eachtraveler meets with the Wizard, heappears each time as someone orsomething different.
The Wizard agrees tohelp each of them-but only in onecondition…
When the Wicked Witch gainsone of Dorothy’s shoes bytrickery, Dorothy in angergrabs a bucket of water andthrows it on the WickedWitch.
When Dorothy and her friends meetthe Wizard of again, he tries to putthem off. Toto accidentally tips overa screen in a corner of the throneroom, revealing the Wizard to be anordinary old man who had journeyedto Oz from Omaha long ago in a hotair balloon.
The Wizard provides theScarecrow with a headfull of bran, pins, andneedles.
The Tin Woodman with asilk heart stuffed withsawdust...
