2. 2. Personal Statement

I am interested in helping individuals with disabilities, with their life challenges and development on the path to independence. I believe that all individuals should be treated equal and with respect. No one asks to be born a certain way there are no choices in that, but the choices we make in life defines who we are as a whole.

I have been working with individuals with disabilities for the past eighteen years and have grown to love the work I do. Working with different types of disabilities that are mental , or physical has taught me to not look at those with disabilities any different than I look at those without disabilities.

I plan on finishing my bachelor in psychology by within the next year around November, 2011. From there I plan on entering into the clinical psychology program and obtaining my masters . After obtaining my masters I plan to enroll into the doctorate program and this will be my most major accomplishment.

    4. 4. Reflection

I have been going to Argosy since January of last year and I have enjoyed my time here learning how to apply my skills more effectively. I have met new people and learned a lot from my professors about my courses and what to expect from future classes. I am very determined to finish all of my learning and refused to give up when times are tough.

My weakness is in math I have trouble some times figuring out the problems being asked or difficulties understanding concepts so times. The problems have to be shown to me step by step without skipping and steps in order for me to understand the problems. My most difficult course was statistics in psychology. I thought it would be easy because I received an A in statistics , but it was difficult for me to grasp the course at first.

I have learned how to use my communication skills to develop a better understanding of how people communicate in different ways. Through language, gestures, listening and reacting to questions. All of this knowledge will help me become a effective counselor in the future.

Argosy has taught me how to be effective in finding facts my answers to certain questions and treatments of past history and the present. I plan on using all of the skills I learn here in my daily quest to help individuals with disabilities whether I am a counselor or behavior specialist I will be well prepared by the time I graduate from Argosy University.

    6. 6. Critical Thinking

The cognitive abilities I have developed at Argosy are learning how to understand social behavior and how it affects you and your social setting. Being able to adapt to my surrounding and understand what society expects of me. We go through life trying to figure out how we work together as a unit when we can only define who we are. Others we come into contact with are merely a test sometimes we pick people’s brains trying to figure out who to trust is this person real, or is this person lying.

All of my classes have some sort of scenario you have to develop on your own or figure out what the outcome will be. Like psychological assessment I had to develop a scenario figure out what could be the assessment of the client and then pick the assessment that best fit the patient’s age group.

In other classes like statistical psychology, I had to use statistics to analyze problems and come up with a mathematical outcome that fit the patient’s problem and treatment means and outcome. It was a more inept class like doing all the steps in a research.

    7. 7. Cognitive Abilities

I wrote a paper on the different stages of cognitive development in children to adulthood. The paper talks about how children develop at certain stages and the skills and knowledge is building and growing as well along the way.

    8. 8. Research Skills

My research paper was on Autism, which was done on two subjects and each had different levels of Autism. I wanted to see if individuals with Autism could still learn and retain learning skills through out adulthood.

    9. 9. Communication Skills: Oral and Written

In my interviewing technique I was able to go out into the community and interview individuals from different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities this experience showed me that we all communicate in our own way but have some of the same belief systems.

    10. 10. Ethics and Diversity Awareness

Ethics is having moral understanding of a person culture, belief and practices. It would not be ethical to go out and say someone did something if they did not just because you do not like them. It is ethics when we respect the differences in each other. Knowing that in actuality we all want the same things. To be respected and have the same opportunities as others and to have the same moral tools to survive as intelligent, understanding and responsible beings.

To be diverse is to know that we are alike and want the same things in like. In some ways we are different, such as our talents, religion, culture, beliefs. Some of us look a little different on the outside, but we are able and capable of accepting change.

In counseling you have to have knowledge of all things around you at all times, because if a patient is in a trauma state ad receives the wrong intervention it can have dramatic results. The paper below ties into ethics and diversity so I added it to the paper. Counseling theories was a very informative class which also teaches the dos and don’ts of counseling.

    11. 11. Foundations of Psychology

Knowledge of the foundation of the field

In social psychology I learned about how people adapt to their environment. What makes use act the way we do if we go into the community and look at it as a positive reaction or a negative reaction to what is in your surroundings. It becomes a world of decisions, beliefs, morals, culture, bias and other social norms. We must always be aware of the things known and not known. Is it good to go into the community and just hurt someone for no apparent reason. It is morally wrong to harm others with cause and without cause, but it happen everyday

With cognitive skills I am able to reflect on my thing and reaction to certain behavior. If I come into contact with a robber would I tell him no I will not give up my money or give him the money to avoid being shot. The skills you learn from everyday situations are instilled in you till you die. Psychology teaches you how to use your mind to receive information and make decision and use the knowledge you learn in your everyday living.

With personality psychology teaches us who we are on the inside are we shallow, selfish and who do we want society to see us as. We do not expect to go out into the world and be perceived as a person without any ethics or morals. The personality you project can decide what position you will be in a company, social setting or anywhere you go. People with a good personality usually can adjust to the things around them no matter what it is.

Biological psychology taught me about how the hearing, instinct my neurological makeup all tied into learning and thinking. How does my mind know how to think or feel about certain situation? I looked at my thinking from my sight, to my brain, to how I had the spark of knowledge, to come up with thoughts on theories, scenario and other thoughts that run through my mind daily. I am always thinking and adapting as long as my brain is functioning

    12. 12. Applied Psychology

Organizational psychology was about using old research to develop new research to improve companies. Like if they wanted to develop a entrance test on skills in a job that the organizational psychologist would look at past test results and see if they were discriminating or bias in any way and revise the test to make it not apply to certain groups. How can this company be more diverse or the educational system be diverse and apply to others.

Forensic psychology was a really interesting class it was interesting to look at certain cases and see how the legal system is designed as a rehabilitation tool that is used to rebuild thinking. Reading cases on kids that have done terrible crimes and were on drugs, or were involved in gang violence. The system is designed to punish through treatment of correcting the corruption that has affected the person ability to think straight and make healthy decisions.

Social psychology was about group behavior, perception and prejudice to name a few. The class thought use to look at our lives through a person who is dealing in politic, racial stereotypes, and anything that affects our daily lives. How do we react to things like war and death it is such a wide range of knowledge in social psychology. I enjoyed the class because I was always able to interact with the instructor and give my personal opinion in group discussion.

    13. 13. Interpersonal Effectiveness

Manage

I can handle feelings sometimes by not letting everyday stressors take over who I am. I try to stay busy and exercise and spend fun time with my family to relieve everyday conflict

Conflict

When my husband and I get into a disagreement I usually leave for a while or he does. We try not to argue in front of the kids, because it will reflect on them. I do not want them to feel as if they have to live like that, or have that type of relationship in life.

Disclosure

It is easy fro me to share my feelings with others , but I will only reveal my feelings at that exact moment I never get deep into myself f in this stage.

Self:

I want to be a doctor in clinical psychology or psychiatry. This has been a life long goal of mine and I am determined to finish it. I share this goal with the world , because I am passionate about my feelings.

Trust

Trust is a big deal because you have to be personal with that person. I can not trust someone because I think they are genuine. With relationships you build trust from being around someone and learning their character.

    14. 14. My future in learning

I had made up my mind one day that I was going to obtain my doctorate in psychology not knowing if I would be able to use most of the credits I obtained from other colleges or not. All I knew is that I had a passion for learning psychology and I wanted to peruse my doctorate degree someday. Argosy has started me on the path to a bright and prosperous future and I look forward to seeing what Argosy can teach me in obtaining a doctorate in my profession.
