  4. 4. We each have Cultural Conditioning that shapes our behaviour and expectations of others Becoming aware of our own cultural conditioning is an essential first step.
  5. 5. Societal “Norms”  This process of interpreting and categorizing stimuli evolves within a society to define behavioural norms.  These norms allow families and communities to interact with some predictable order.  We may even formalize these as rules and laws to avoid the chaos that would ensue if they were not followed.
  6. 6. How do we begin to understand these differences? Start with a framework and some descriptive terms

  8. 8. What is your own cultural conditioning? As parents teach their children the ways to demonstrate respect, the children come to believe that the behaviours ARE respect. For example – saying please and thank you, hand shake, eye contact….
  9. 9. How might my cultural conditioning affect my leadership? Assumptions Others think the same way Expectations Everyone knows what’s expected and how to behave. Misunderstanding Why is that person behaving inappropriately?

  11. 11. How would someone that is different in uncertainty avoidance perceive this situation? How might that affect their behavior? What can we do to avoid misunderstanding?
