ZEELAND LAGOON
Zeeland is the least populous, and westernmost
providence in the Netherlands.
The Grevelingen, Volkerak, and Oosterschield water-
ways are cut off from the sea through dikes and levees.
The proposal is to allow water in a controlled manner,
as well as a tidal energy plant in the Grevelingen.
The Zeeland Lagoon Proposal is a complex of safety,
agriculture, shipping, recreation, and climate. It is a
merger of ideas for the future of the delta.
It includes a new barrier that only closes when the

tect the farmland and homes.
Water intake will be controlled, and a lock will allow
boats to enter. Recreation is a crucial element as well,
with a ring of new tidal nature areas and new islands
forming with connected boardwalks.
The economic area is largely dependent on tourism,

the entire economy.
The hope is to reclain the identity of the marshland by
restoring the character and economy of the delta.
