Kolam or Rangoli

  1. 1. INDIAN ART• In this project we are going to visit India where people from the south celebrate a festival called Diwali.
  2. 2. KOLAM and RANGOLI Rangoli is the name of one of the mostartistic expressions of India.The designof pictures on the walls and floors.It is a popular art made in the houses by the families. It has got some rituals and decoratives meanings.
  3. 3. WHAT IS A KOLAM AND RANGOLI DESIGN?• They are decorative symmetrical pictures .• They are painted on the floor in front of the house’s door. 
  4. 4. What symmetrical shapes can you find in a rangoli?• The common rangoli themes are: Geometrical figures such as circles, triangles, squares, ovals and rectangles dominate. Apart from geometrical figures, images of flowers,creepers, trees, rising sun, moon, stars, chakra, fish, birds, elephants, dancing figures, tridents etc.
  5. 5. COLOURING THE RANGOLIS• Traditionally women painted the rangolis but nowadays men also paint them.• They use rice powder to create the pictures and different colour chalks to colour the rangolis.
  6. 6. A little bit of history about kolan• A kolan is a drawn prayer that calls prosperity to the home.• Also it is a symbol that welcomes everybody to the house.
  7. 7. HOW TO MAKE A KOLAM OR RANGOLI• The design is developed from an initial matrix of dots, which are joined by lines closing the drawing.

  9. 9. NOW LET’S DESIGN OUR OWN RANGOLI• Draw a design of your kolam or rangoli in a piece of paper.• Crush chalk powder and decorate your little ranyoli.• Now work with a group and decide which of your rangolis you like best.• Let’s go to the playground and design a big kolam with your friends.
