A STUDY ON PROS & CONS
OF ROAD WIDENING
INTRODUCTION
 Roads are meant to facilitate mobility – the
movement of people & goods.
 However most roads are widened &
developed for facilitating vehicles rather than
for pedestrians & non motorized vehicle.
 Road widening is normally carried out when
the road is inadequate for the traffic using it,
or when extra lanes are needed. Road
widening can improve traffic safety and
capacity.
 the widening roads are one of the useful
methods to deal with the current long-
standing traffic problems. On the other hand,
we have to also check how road widening
affects the environment (i.e. cutting trees) &
also local residents.
 By looking at all these favorable &
unfavorable factors, we came to know that it
is very important to know the Pros & Cons of
Road Widening.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
 McBride’s (2013) explained that how environment gets
affect from the project of road widening. While doing the
project some of the trees will be cutoff unnecessarily. He
also explained that how we can conduct the road widening
project without damaging the environment by using correct
and advanced technology.
 Asia pulse (2011) states that due to road widening will be
able to manage increased capacity of vehicles. It controls
the traffic of new vehicles in the road and it makes
transportation process easy. The extension of the road once
completed will additionally ease the current traffic condition.
it reduces according to time and increases the driving
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
 This study focuses on attempting to know
the importance of Road Widening & the
possible impact on environment &
economic stability of affected area &
especially impact on local residents.
 To assess the environmental impact of
road widening in the ecosystem of
particular area and in the topography of
particular area & also to assess the
awareness of public, specially on the
people along the affected area.
OBJECTIVES
 To analyze the impact of road
widening on local residents.
 To know the impact of road widening
on environment.
METHODOLOGY OF THE
STUDY
 Research type
The type of research used for this study is
descriptive research. Descriptive research is also
known as statistical research, describes data &
characteristics about the population or
phenomenon being studied. It describes & tells us
the relationship between one variable & another
variable.
 Sources of study
This study is based on both primary and
secondary data.
 Primary data
Primary data was collected through structured
questionnaire.
 Secondary data
The secondary data was collected from
published sources like books, journals, news
paper & various research articles. Etc.
further, the relevant material & data will be
collected from different websites also.
 Sample size
The sample size is 50.
 Research tool
The statistical tools such as graphs and pie
chart are used for analysis & we used
reliability statistics & descriptive statistics

INTERPRETATION: From the above bar graph we can interpret that out of 50, 24
respondents are agreed that road widening boosted the property value. It shows the
majority of them are agreed. & 11 respondents of them are strongly agreed on that, 7
respondents are disagreed that road widening boost that property value, 4 respondents are
strongly disagreed and 4 respondents are neither agreed nor disagreed.
 Reliability Statistics
Cronbach's Alpha Cronbach's Alpha
Based on Standardized
Items
N of Items
.475 .488 18
Cronbach's alpha is the most common measure of internal consistency
("reliability"). It is most commonly used when you have multiple Likert
questions in a survey/questionnaire that form a scale and you wish to
determine if the scale is reliable. Cronbach'salpha is 0.475, which
indicates a moderately low level of internal consistency for our scale
with this specific sample. Reliability coefficient of .70 or higher is
considered "acceptable" in most social science research situations. In our
case it is 0.475 it is because of the small sample size and time constraints
in data collection.
 FINDINGS
 72% of people were satisfied with road widening.
 Residents get benefited like road widening saves
the commuting time of public & new sewage lines
are introduced & also increases the economical
condition of the locality.
 Road widening is reason to cut the road side
trees & the environment is affected through road
widening.
 Dust increased in environment due to road
widening process.
 Road widening works are not completed on a
time bound basis.
 Property value was boosted by the road widening.
 SUGGESTION
 Only 72% of people were satisfied, so our suggestion
is to improve the work efficiency to satisfy more
people.
 It’s almost 84% of people said environment is
affected. So, our suggestion is related authority has to
take necessary measure to protect the environment.
 The concerned authority & all relating department has
to take necessary steps to complete the road widening
work on a time bound basis.
 Try to avoid the cutting of road side trees.
 The concerned authority should try to avoid or take
necessary measure to control dust during the road
widening work.
Thus, as per our study, the main suggestion is that
concerned authority has try to improve the efficiency of
road widening work which will leads to reduce the
accidents & improve the economical condition of the
 CONCLUSION
 From the research study, we conclude that, the process of
road widening has favorably & unfavorably impact on
local residents & the environment.
 Because of road widening local residents get advantages
like new sewage lines introduced, saves the commuting
time, property value boosted, accidents reduced,
economical condition is increased & disadvantages like
creates relocation issues & health hazards.
 In similar way, environment also gets affected through
road widening like dust increases in environment, cutting
of road side trees, depletion of natural resources & also
affects to animals & bird habitat.
 & mainly completion of road widening work on a time
bound basis & also willingness to improve the efficiency of
road widening work is required.
 Finally we can say “PROS & CONS” of road widening is
like “TWO SIDES OF SAME COIN”.

The extension of the road once completed will additionally ease the current traffic condition. it reduces according to time and increases the driving
  • 5. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM  This study focuses on attempting to know the importance of Road Widening & the possible impact on environment & economic stability of affected area & especially impact on local residents.  To assess the environmental impact of road widening in the ecosystem of particular area and in the topography of particular area & also to assess the awareness of public, specially on the people along the affected area.
  • 6. OBJECTIVES  To analyze the impact of road widening on local residents.  To know the impact of road widening on environment.
  • 7. METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY  Research type The type of research used for this study is descriptive research. Descriptive research is also known as statistical research, describes data & characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studied. It describes & tells us the relationship between one variable & another variable.  Sources of study This study is based on both primary and secondary data.  Primary data Primary data was collected through structured questionnaire.
  • 8.  Secondary data The secondary data was collected from published sources like books, journals, news paper & various research articles. Etc. further, the relevant material & data will be collected from different websites also.  Sample size The sample size is 50.  Research tool The statistical tools such as graphs and pie chart are used for analysis & we used reliability statistics & descriptive statistics

It shows the majority of them are agreed. & 11 respondents of them are strongly agreed on that, 7 respondents are disagreed that road widening boost that property value, 4 respondents are strongly disagreed and 4 respondents are neither agreed nor disagreed.
  • 12.  Reliability Statistics Cronbach's Alpha Cronbach's Alpha Based on Standardized Items N of Items .475 .488 18 Cronbach's alpha is the most common measure of internal consistency ("reliability"). It is most commonly used when you have multiple Likert questions in a survey/questionnaire that form a scale and you wish to determine if the scale is reliable. Cronbach'salpha is 0.475, which indicates a moderately low level of internal consistency for our scale with this specific sample. Reliability coefficient of .70 or higher is considered "acceptable" in most social science research situations. In our case it is 0.475 it is because of the small sample size and time constraints in data collection.
  • 13.  FINDINGS  72% of people were satisfied with road widening.  Residents get benefited like road widening saves the commuting time of public & new sewage lines are introduced & also increases the economical condition of the locality.  Road widening is reason to cut the road side trees & the environment is affected through road widening.  Dust increased in environment due to road widening process.  Road widening works are not completed on a time bound basis.  Property value was boosted by the road widening.
  • 14.  SUGGESTION  Only 72% of people were satisfied, so our suggestion is to improve the work efficiency to satisfy more people.  It’s almost 84% of people said environment is affected. So, our suggestion is related authority has to take necessary measure to protect the environment.  The concerned authority & all relating department has to take necessary steps to complete the road widening work on a time bound basis.  Try to avoid the cutting of road side trees.  The concerned authority should try to avoid or take necessary measure to control dust during the road widening work. Thus, as per our study, the main suggestion is that concerned authority has try to improve the efficiency of road widening work which will leads to reduce the accidents & improve the economical condition of the
  • 15.  CONCLUSION  From the research study, we conclude that, the process of road widening has favorably & unfavorably impact on local residents & the environment.  Because of road widening local residents get advantages like new sewage lines introduced, saves the commuting time, property value boosted, accidents reduced, economical condition is increased & disadvantages like creates relocation issues & health hazards.  In similar way, environment also gets affected through road widening like dust increases in environment, cutting of road side trees, depletion of natural resources & also affects to animals & bird habitat.  & mainly completion of road widening work on a time bound basis & also willingness to improve the efficiency of road widening work is required.  Finally we can say “PROS & CONS” of road widening is like “TWO SIDES OF SAME COIN”.
