Introduction <ul><li>Gandhidham is a city and a municipality in the Kachchh District of Gujarat state of India </li></ul><ul><li>The town was created in the early 1950s for the resettlement of the refugees from Sindh of Pakistan in the aftermath of the partition of India </li></ul><ul><li>In recent history Gandhidham is a fast developing city in Gujarat state </li></ul>

History <ul><li>Maharaja of Kutch on advice of Gandhiji, gave 15000 acres of land to Bhai Pratap, who founded Sindhu Resettlement Corporation to rehabilitate Sindhi Hindus uprooted from their motherland </li></ul><ul><li>The foundation stone of town was laid with blessings of Mahatma Gandhi and hence town was named Gandhidham </li></ul><ul><li>Main objective of the corporation was to assist in the rehousing of displaced persons by the construction of new town on a site few miles inland from location selected by Government of India for new port of Kandla on the Gulf of Kachchh </li></ul>

Overview of earthquake <ul><li>A severe Earthquake of the magnitude of 6.9 at Richter scale occurred at 8.46 A.M. on 26 th January 2001 </li></ul><ul><li>The earthquake devastated the district of Kutch in the northwestern part of the state, and many other districts of the state also suffered terrible human and property losses </li></ul>

Impact of earthquake <ul><li>Its impact has been felt in various parts of the Country </li></ul><ul><li>The total number of injured is reported to be 1,66,000 out of which around 20,000 persons are seriously injured. The number of people still missing is 233 in Kutch </li></ul><ul><li>The earthquake most seriously affected the Kandla port, the busiest port in India, which caters to the hinterland of western, central and northern India </li></ul><ul><li>The workers have migrated from Kandla due to fear of earthquake </li></ul>

Development after earthquake <ul><li>Education:- Gandhidham has several schools providing high school education </li></ul><ul><li>Business:- Most of the business depends on shipping, but after the tax incentives incorporated after the 2001 earthquake, many corporations and industries have moved in </li></ul><ul><li>Transportation:- Gandhidham is connected by road and rail with rest of India Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Pune, Calcutta, Ahmedabad, Indore, Bangalore, Jaipur, and Delhi </li></ul>

Conclusion <ul><li>The earthquake in January 2001 has been a blessing in disguise and the blessing calamity has been forwarded to the massive development aid </li></ul><ul><li>After earthquake there is number of development in many areas such as education, transport and business sector also developed in Gandhidham </li></ul>
