  • I am a barrister specializing in IP, technology, media and competition law.I am a sponsor of Bmedia and its legal services architect. I provide advice and information on the law on a pro bono or free basis at various IP clinics one of which takes place at Barnsley.I also refer clients to other professionals such as Kate Reid, Michael Harrison and Gareth Greaves-Milner as appropriate.
  • Bmedia exists to support businesses in the digital and creative industries, particularly those in Bradford and South Yorkshire.
  • Those businesses design and develop new designs, new creative works, new software and other things for themselves and their clients. These are assets that generate income just like other investments such as land and machinery. Because they are the result of mental effort they are known as intellectual assets.
  • Examples include brands – the sign by which a trader is recognized in the market place
  • Design both functional as in the layout of a jet engineOr aesthetic as in a garment or product design.
  • New products and manufacturing processes or possibly new software and services
  • Books, plays, paintings and films but also drama, dance and concerts
  • Creative and enterprising people such as yourselves create intellectual assets only because you are rewarded in some way or other for their creation. This ultimately takes the form of a monopoly or exclusive right to enjoy the assets such as a patent for an invention or the right of an author or artist to prevent others from copying his novel or painting.The laws that confer those rights are known collectively as "intellectual property".Examples include:
  • Trade marks for brands
  • Registered designs for new product designs having individual character.
  • Patents for inventions, that is to say new products or productive processes
