7. Mevlana
Mevlana rumi is a 13th century
Muslim saint and Anatolian
mystic known throughout the world
for his exquisite poems and words
of wisdom, have been translated
into many languages. Rumi, as he is
known in the west, is the best
selling Poet in the USA. The
United Nations declared 2007 The
year of Rumi and celebrations were
held world wide. To him all
religions were more or less
truth. Mevlana looked with the
same eye on Muslim, Jew and
Christian alike. Mevlana died on 17
December 1273 and was laid to
rest beside his father in Konya, in
present day Turkey.
8. Cahit Arf
• Cahit Arf was born in Selanik
• Receiving a scholarship from the Turkish
Ministry of Education he continued his
education in Paris and graduated from Ecole
Normale Superieure
• He was the president of the Turkish
Mathematical Society from 1985 until 1989.
• Professor Arf received several awards for his
contributions to Mathematics, among them
are, Inonu Award 1948,TUBITAK Science
Award 1974,Comandur des Palmes
Acade`miques 1994.Professor Arf was a
member of the Mainz Academy and the Turkish
Academy of Sciences
• Professor Arf 's influence on Turkish
Mathematics was profound.
• Cahit Arf passed away on December 26, 1997
in Bebek, Istanbul, at the age of 87. The
collected works of Cahit Arf was published, in
1988, by the Turkish Mathematical Society.
