2. In what ways does
your media product use,
develop or challenge
forms and conventions
of real media products?
3.
4. MASTHEAD
The name of the
magazine was chosen
because it focuses
on new talent so
they are ‘on the horizon’
since they are not
yet well known.
The colours of the
masthead relate well to
the name as it is bright
orange fading into
darkness like a sunset
which is what most
people think of when
they think of a horizon.
Drop shadow to the
right of the title to
make it stand out
‘Impact’ font used
as it is simple, easy
to read and looks
professional without
being intimidating.
Covered slightly by
the main image to
create idea of having
a good reputation but
still able to read it.
5. MAIN IMAGE
The image is the most
dominant aspect of
the cover.
It slightly covers the
masthead to create
the idea that the
magazine has a large
enough reputation to
be recognised without
being able to read it.
The majority is still visible
for people who have
not seen it before.
The person in the
photo is looking
straight at the
camera to make
passers-by feel
personally
addressed.
The image is clear
and slightly edited
to emit a
professional look.
6. ESSENTIAL INFO
Barcode needed
to be purchased in
a shop. Removed
white background
to blend in with
the colour scheme
while maintaining
its function.
Date of issue and
price in small text
to not overpower
the other content.
Price decided based on
audience research that
is low enough for people
to consider buying it while
still making a profit.
Date and price in the top
right corner like in other
magazines but different
as under the masthead
as no space above and
also fills in gaps.
7. COVERLINE & SUBHEADING
Coverline is brighter
than the background
and other text so it
stands out while
still fitting with the
overall colour scheme.
Block letters with
cursive ‘sitting’ on
top as used in
found examples.
Subheading further
explains what will be
discussed in the article
by giving more detail
about the coverline.
Drop shadows used
on all text to ensure
they don’t clash with
the background.
Main coverline is
larger than the less
important stories
to show this is the
biggest story.
8. OTHER STORIES
Covering the main image
while still managing to
keep the image as the
main focus.
Bold, black boxes
catch people’s eye
and also make
the information
easy to read whilst
fitting with the subtle
newspaper style
that is incorporated
in some places.
Different fonts used for
each point so they are
easily distinguishable.
Black writing
stands out on the
background and
having pink/red
text on the black
box fits with the
colour scheme.
No photos allows
attention to stay on the
information and prevents
focus being pulled from
the main image.
9.
10. COLOUR SCHEME
The same main
colour as the
cover is used
since these will
be the same in
every issue
which creates an
identity for the
magazine.
The black boxes are
carried on to this page with
the same colour used for
the text on the boxes, tabs
and competition details
to maintain the colour
scheme.
Like on the cover, there
is black writing on top
of the background so it
is easy to read and keeps
the colour scheme that
people will associate with
this magazine.
To break up the
black and pink,
the masthead for
this has white
writing to make it
slightly brighter.
11. TEXT
Text in the page
index is rather
small so it does
not take up too
much space but
is still easy to read.
Masthead is much bigger
than the rest of the text
so this is the first place
people look and they will
know in advance what to
expect on this page.
‘Contents’ is the
same font as the
cover’s masthead
so it is clear they
are the same
document.
All headings and page numbers are the same font as
having too many fonts on the same page would be
excessive.
In the page index,
appealing factors of a
story e.g. name of a
famous band put in bold
to draw people’s eyes
and make them want to
know what it is about.
12. IMAGES
Using a silhouette creates
a feeling of mystery and
encourages customers
to buy it to know
something exclusive.
A photo of a festival
would put people in the
mood to go to one
especially with the effect
to make it look sunnier.
Showing the
star holding a
microphone shows
the reader she is a
singer and relates
to the article as
she is talking about
her new career
as a musician.
The two larger
images look
professional
as they are not
blurry, have been
edited efficiently
and useful effects
were added.
Having the second image
facing out of the page
with a 3-D shadow effect
makes it look like they are
coming out of the page.
13.
14. ALL CONVENTIONS
Main image
takes up majority
of right page-
main focus.
Microphone is
held up to the
camera to form
a connection
with the reader.
Black and white writing means it is easy to read whilst
fitting with the underlying newspaper style. Not too much
writing for younger audience but enough to satisfy
stronger readers from older end of target audience.
Grey background
like on the contents
page as white may
be too bright.
Captions for
every image to
explain why they
have been used.
The same colour used
for title and other sections
to keep the colour scheme.
Pull quote
is used as it
often is in
magazines.
Each line is
a different
font&shade
as seen in
an example.
Title at the top of the page to
know what it is about. Larger
text to catch reader’s eye.
