  3. 3. Leadership, Equality and DiversityLeaders must be appointed only on the basis ofmerit and nothing else.If the society excludes any section of thecommunity then it will miss the opportunity ofappointing people with skills and abilities fromthat part of the society

Why do doctors harm patients?At any give time– 1 to 6% doctors have problems with their performance– 5% Doctors behaviour is so disruptive that it affects patient safety and quality– 1 in 17 Doctors drink excessively or take drugs sometime in their life– 15% Doctors performance is affected due to ill health during their life time

My own style of LeadershipMD of Bury (1998-2003) • MD of Wigan (2010 – To date)– Enthusiastic and passionate • Enthusiastic and passionate– I wanted to change the world • I have changed myself– I wanted result at any cost • I want results– I was impatient • I have lot of patience– Spent 90% of my time with 5% • I spend lot of my time with my difficult and useless doctors hard working colleagues– I was arrogant and over- • I am polite, courteous confident

My own style of LeadershipBury Wigan– Leadership is a power • Leadership is responsibility– Meetings were fire fighting • I enjoy meetings– I wanted to win the mind • I try my best to win the heart– I told them what to do • I tell them what needs to be done– I never used to thank hard • I thank them often, praise them a working consultants lot– Lot of knee jerk reaction • I avoid any knee jerk reaction– People could see my anger • I am very composed and calm– They are difficult doctors • I do not find anyone difficult

ResultsBury WWLFT – Enjoying a lot– Did not enjoy my job – Getting consistent results– Got some results – Sleep very well– Never used to sleep well – I am pretty confident– I was not confident of long term success – Today have 40 medical leaders, many BEM/IMGs– Never created more leaders – Long term strategy to be– Short term aims the best in the country– I saw them as difficult bunch – I don’t find anyone difficult – They can be challenging

  40. 40. WWLFT – Next 6 MonthsDoctors in difficulty and difficult doctors– All of them were dealt one by oneI was very honest and sincere with themMany were surprised and shocked about thefeedback I had receivedSome genuinely did not realise the impact oftheir behaviour on others
