  • This is your chance to put them at ease, smile – they will be nervous. Try to make them un-nervous! This is an important student/professional exchange and interaction
  • Positive and constructive, most entries will be eliminated, do not lecture, be careful of phrasing, write comments as you go – don’t wait until the end of the day! This is an education program, not a contest! The contest is the motivator at the end, but not the point. Your job is to be educators and “experts.” You must give positive comments. This is critical because most will not win an award! Only (how many?) our of (how many) kids? will win anything.

    2. 2. Judge’s Orientation <ul><li>Turn OFF cell phones. </li></ul><ul><li>Keep to the time limit. </li></ul><ul><li>Complete and return all forms by 1:00 </li></ul>

    4. 4. 2010 Theme <ul><li>In history. </li></ul><ul><li>Answer the question “ so what?” </li></ul><ul><li>What happened afterward as a result of this event. </li></ul><ul><li>Show what happened before or after. </li></ul>
    5. 5. Procedure <ul><li>Team of three. </li></ul><ul><li>One captain. </li></ul><ul><li>Keep to the time limit. </li></ul><ul><li>Make periodic announcements: turn off cell phones, no photos, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>It is permissible to have absent group members. </li></ul>
    6. 6. Evaluation, Historical Quality (60%) <ul><li>The most important aspect of an entry is its historical quality, which determines 60% of the total evaluation. The judges' evaluation will rest on the students' success at conducting historical research, interpreting their research, and drawing conclusions. </li></ul><ul><li>Sources. </li></ul><ul><li>Balance (primary and secondary). </li></ul><ul><li>Context (needs to show significance). </li></ul><ul><li>Available primary sources . </li></ul>

Lunch/Post-Interviews <ul><li>Check in/volunteer to be a run-off judge. </li></ul><ul><li>Discuss evaluations with your team. </li></ul><ul><li>Determine the top 2 entries first and turn them in AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. </li></ul><ul><li>Rank the rest of the entries </li></ul><ul><li>Finish writing comments. </li></ul>
