Potential Causation of the Depressed
            Graduation Rate
Student Related Causation Community Related Causation
• Non-traditional Networks • Neighborhood Blight
• Parental Education Level • Lack of Service for
• Household Income Minorities (ESL students
• Cultural Restraints and families)
• Lack of Family Support • No Alternative Education
                                     Pathways
• Substance Abuse
                                   • Feasible High School
• Crisis (personal or familial ) College Connection
New Bedford At a Glance
• As of 2010, the unemployment rate is 8.9% ,
which means approximately 5000 people out
58,000 people in the 18-65 demographic.
• The Poverty level is 20.2 %.
• The city population recorded in 2010 was
  95,072 people.
• Only 62.2% speak English
Addressing the high school
  dropout crisis is a key
         strategy
  for economic growth
51% of the people in new
Bedford have children under 18
and can be presumably enrolled
           in school
New Bedford’s future is
dependent on improving the
 education provided to its
        residents.
In 2010, 386 students did not
       graduate from NBHS.

If these student had graduated it is anticipated
             they could have earned
                              This single class of
 4.16 Million additional graduates would
                           likely earn as much as
dollars $4.16 million more in an
                         average year, compared to
(Collectively) their earnings without a high
                               school diploma.
The additional 386 graduates’
  increased earnings, combined,
         would likely allow
them to spend up to an additional
  3 million annually and investing
close to another 1 million annually
Imagine what the additional 3
million in spending and nearly 1
million in investments could do for
   the New Bedford economy?
Additional Effects of Increasing
Graduation Rate on New Bedford as
               Whole
• More Educational opportunities for New
  Bedford youth
• Crime Reduction
• Blight Reduction
• Increase in Population
  – Families returning to city from Suburbs
• New Jobs
Service for Students
• In order to increase graduation rate, students
must be encouraged to make realistic college
  connections and plan
• The programs that assist students with their
studies especially in English subject, and SAT’s
  and define goals
Maintaining Students Interest
High School’s Connection with Organizations
running internship programs to support minority
students
Many students don’t show college interest, because
of few factors such as guidance and support from
parents and lack of financial resources.
College internship program will help students gain
some college level skills and experience.
Have discussion with senior college students and
faculty
Internship Example:
    Latino and African American High
• Latino and African American High School Internship
  Program.
• Made possible by Saban research institution Children's
  Hospital, LA, CA
• It was a six-weeks long summer program for students
entering in their senior year in high school.
• Committed to promote and support students.
• Helped them gain experience in biomedical research
• Helped them make college decision
• LA-HIP intenship program video
Crime Reduction
• A UCLA and Ontario University study found that
there is 14-26 percent crime risk reduction
associated with the successful completion of high
              school among young men.
197 young men did not graduate from
             NBHS in 2010
Its estimated that 55% of crime is
committed by young men between 18-35
991 of 2,203 thefts in 2010 are estimated to have
been committed by young men .By the HS diploma
crime reduction principle New Bedford could have
experienced 139-258 less thefts in 2010
Additional Jobs
   The addition 386 graduates would
likely contribute an additional 30 job
   opportunities to the New Bedford
               Community.
This would create a 5.25 million dollars
          in economic growth.
Currently
   “Knowledge-based industries [are]
reluctant to relocate to our community
to offer our residents well-paying jobs.
Thus, the low graduation rates are not
just a school problem but a community
                problem”
If The Graduation Rate Increased:
Knowledge Based Industries could start up or
              relocate to New Bedford

Bio Technology Start Up Information Technology
Starting Salary: $30,000 Starting Salary: $30,000
Example of Jobs: Example of Jobs:
• Research & Development
                               • Database Administration

                               • Information Security
• Manufacturing &
    Production • Cloud Computing
• Administrative Support • Software development
New Bedford’s Population Growth
A improved High School system with a
   competitive graduation rate would inspire
                     growth.
• Families return for the school system.
• Young professionals seeking career
  opportunities
• “Empty Nesters” returning to the vibrancy of
  city life.
A community problem
The High School graduation rate at
New Bedford High affects the entire
   community through, and if the
problem is ever to be rectified it will
    take the entire communities
            involvement.
