  5. 5. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide WELCOME TO TRIALDIRECTOR 5 NETWORK Welcome to TrialDirector 5.1 Network edition! We’ve worked to provide you with the most robust network- based version of TrialDirector yet. New to version 5.1 of TrialDirector is the Presentation Preview tool, which allows you to easily preview your exhibits and any corresponding annotations or treatments BEFORE showing them live in the Presentation Mode. In TrialDirector 5.1, you can also automatically create video clips from any issue codes applied to your transcripts. 5.1 is also fully compatible with the Windows Vista™ operating system. From an administrative standpoint, we’ve made several changes as well! TrialDirector 5 Network server installations can now be performed from either an administrative workstation to the server, or directly on the server to itself, eliminating the need to keep that admin workstation intact to administer the TrialDirector Network installation. We’ve simplified the initial setup with a smarter application install path and case storage location wizard. We have introduced the Client Connection Viewer which allows administrators the ability to see who is using TrialDirector Network and what machine they’re logged in from; and lastly, we’ve introduced the Client Access License upgrade tool to help manage TrialDirector 5 Network Client Access Licenses (CALs) on your server. We hope that you enjoy the newest version of inData TrialDirector 5 Network. We’ve worked hard to bring you the very best, with ease of use for both administrators and end-users built right in! Thank you for your continued support! inData Development Team inData Product Quality Assurance Team inData Technical Support Team 1
  6. 6. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide SERVER CONFIGURATION RECOMMENDATIONS TrialDirector 5 Network is a client/server package that allows a specified number of users to access the TrialDirector 5 application. This type of install offers a lower overall cost of ownership as well as simplified maintenance. The Minimum and recommended hardware configurations for servers are shown below. The minimum configuration will provide adequate performance, however, the recommended configuration provides greater speed, higher performance, and enhanced video playback due to the increased processor speed, additional video memory, and RAM. Server Hardware Requirements Minimum Server System Configuration Pentium IV 3GHz Processor Windows 2000 Server (Service Pack 4 required) 1GB System RAM 10GB Hard disk space available (for image, audio/video storage) Recommended Server System Configuration Dual Processor, Dual Core Intel Xeon 5110 1.06GHz Processors (or better) Windows 2003 Server 4GB System RAM 100GB Hard disk space available (for image, audio/video storage) Supported Server Operating Systems inData has designed, developed, and tested TrialDirector for use with the following Microsoft Windows servers. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server (SP4) Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server (SP4) Microsoft Windows 2003 Server – Standard Edition (32-bit) Microsoft Windows 2003 Server – Enterprise Edition (32-bit) The TrialDirector 5 Network installation should work on other Windows™ compatible file servers, such as Samba or Novell, however it is not warranted to do so. TrialDirector 5 Network version has not been certified for application server platforms, such as Windows Terminal Server and Citrix, and is therefore not warranted to perform in those environments. 2
  7. 7. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE RECOMMENDATIONS These Network Infrastructure Recommendations shown below will ensure that the inData TrialDirector Network software has a robust operating environment. Adhering to these recommendations will allow faster response times when accessing case databases and image information across the network. 100MB/1GB BaseT Local Area Network connections between server and client Microsoft NetBIOS based network connectivity for UNC path resolution MAN and WAN networks require fiber backbone connectivity between sites VPN access via an internet connection is NOT recommended Use of NetBIOS TCP/IP protocol supports both IPv4 and IPv6 Note: Multimedia Playback over Networks It is recommended that audio/video files (such as MPEG, AVI, WAV, etc.) be stored locally on client workstations. Multimedia playback performance can be hindered because of excessive network traffic. Users will have the best experience using multimedia that is stored on their local workstation. 3
  8. 8. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide CLIENT SYSTEM CONFIGURATION RECOMMENDATIONS The minimum and recommended hardware configurations for client workstations are shown below. The minimum configuration will provide adequate performance, however, the recommended configuration pro- vides greater speed and enhanced video playback due to the increased processor speed, additional video memory, and RAM. 9. 9. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide Supported Client Operating Systems The inData TrialDirector 5 Network has been installed and tested on the following operating system plat- forms. If you do not see your operating system listed, it has not been tested and is therefore not supported. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (SP4) Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2 required) Microsoft Windows Vista Client System Microsoft Windows Components Requirements The following Windows Operating System components should be installed on each workstation. These com- ponents are necessary for optimal operation of the TrialDirector 5 Network software. Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 (or newer) Microsoft DirectX 9.0c The client installation does NOT redistribute/install these components. The client installation will simply check the current version and enter the results into the Install.log file generated in the C:Program Filesin- DataTrialDirector 5 Network folder. If you are not sure if your target workstation has the components listed above, check the Install.log file for the following entries: *** CHECK FOR MDAC VERSION: 06/20/07 15:56;48 *** ***MDAC VERSION: 2.70 *** *** CHECK FOR DIRECTX VERSION: 06/20/07 15:56:48 *** ***DIRECTX VERSION: 9.00 *** In the example above, the target workstation has MDAC v2.70 and DirectX 9.0 installed. This meets the requirements listed above. Updated versions of these components can be downloaded from the Microsoft website or via Windows Update. 5

  11. 11. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide Installing the TrialDirector 5 Network Server software 1. Insert the TrialDirector installation CD into a CD-Rom drive on either an administrative workstation or on the target server itself. If the installation program does not launch automatically, locate and double-click the TD5NetSetup.exe file. This will begin the process of installing the TrialDirector license and the application files to the server. 2. The TrialDirector 5 Network Server installation welcome displays. Take a few moments to read the process overview that is provided in the dialog. Click Next to continue. 3. Read the license agreement and select Yes option to continue, or select No to cancel the installation. 4. Enter the TrialDirector 5 Network Server serial number and click Next to continue. If an invalid serial number is entered, you will not be allowed to continue. When a valid serial number is entered, the activation dialog is displayed. 7
  12. 12. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 5. The activation dialog displays the serial number entered on the previous screen, along with the Product Registration ID. You will need these numbers if you are going to call inData for an activation code. (If there is no Internet or e-mail access, use the 800 number to contact inData Customer Service.) Otherwise, click the Register Online link to get your activation code over the Internet. 6. Clicking the Register Online button will launch the default system web browser and take you to the inData Online registration screen. Enter your Contact information including Title, First and Last name, Email address and Phone number. Your information is used only internally by inData and will never be given or sold to third parties. Email contact information is used for critical notifications only, unless the “Please send me inData news and events information” checkbox is selected. Click Submit to have the Activation Code generated. 7. After you’ve submitted your registration information, your Activation code will display. Take note of, or copy, the activation code. Minimize your browser to return to the installation Registration dialog box. 8
  13. 13. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 8. Copy and paste, or type the Activation code into the space provided in the Registration screen. Click Next to continue. 9. The next dialog shows the default Network Server Application Folder and Network Case Data Folder. The default folders will be the first mapped network drive on your system. Click the Browse buttons to select the appropriate paths on your network. The TrialDirector installation will place the application files at two folder levels. Using the Network Server Application Folder example shown at right, the TrialDirector Network program files are stored in the Application Files folder, while the Cases will be created in the Cases folder. Both folders reside in the TrialDirector Network Server folder. Note: Case data and the Application Files are not required to reside in the same parent folder, or even on the same share or same server. Click Next to continue after confirming or selecting the destination folder paths. 10. Click Next to continue after confirming or selecting the destination folder paths. 9
  14. 14. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 11. The application and case data files are installed to the network server. The Trial- Director client installation package is also copied to the application path root. 12. When the server installation is complete, the dialog at right will appear. The client install file—“Client Install.exe”— executable must be run from the folder in which the TrialDirector Network server installation deployed it. 1. Navigate to the server location where the TrialDirector application resides. You will find a folder named Client Install. Launch the Client Install.exe file to begin the client installation. (The Client Install.exe can use the /s switch for quiet install, if desired). Note: The client installation defaults to the path %Program_Files%inData TrialDirector 5 and cannot be changed. 2. Click Next to begin. 3. Read the license agreement and select Yes to continue, or select No to cancel the installation. 4. On the following dialog box, click Next to begin the installation. 12
  17. 17. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 5. The required application files are installed to the local client computer. 6. When the installation is completed, the dia- log at right will appear. Click Finish to exit the installation. Considerations: Your TrialDirector Network license count is for concurrently connected Clients. You may install the TrialDirector Network client software on any number of workstations, but the number of users at any point in time is limited by your authorized license count. TrialDirector Network will not run when a user is disconnected from the network or if the server on which TrialDirector Network is installed is unavailable. For mobile users, please consult the inData Sales Department for information on TrialDirector standalone licensing. If installing TrialDirector 5 Network on a system that already has TrialDirector 5 standalone installed, the versions must be identical, otherwise TrialDirector 5 Network will not install. Neither TrialDirector 5.1 Network or TrialDirector 5.1 standalone will conflict with TrialDirector version 4.0 or 4.5. Both TrialDirector 5 and 4 can reside on the same system without issue. 13
  18. 18. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide UPGRADING A TRIALDIRECTOR 5.0 NETWORK SERVER TO 5.1 NETWORK SERVER The TrialDirector 5.1 Network Server upgrade process can be summarized as a two step process: 1. Upgrade the TrialDirector 5.0.x Network Server. 2. Upgrade the TrialDirector 5.0.x Network Clients. The Server upgrade must be completed prior to upgrading the Clients, as the Client installation file is only available after the server upgrade has been completed. The TrialDirector 5.1 Network Server installation can be upgraded from either an administrative workstation or from the server itself. In either case, the target Microsoft Windows network share must be mapped as a drive on the machine where the software installation is being run. Perform the mapping operation before launching the TrialDirector Network Server upgrade. The network share drive mapping is temporary and only required for the installation of the server. The specific drive letter is unimportant. The installer will automatically detect the first mapped drive letter on the system; clicking Browse will allow you to change the default path. 1. Confirm that there are no users connected to, or attempting to connect the TrialDirec- tor 5.0 Network Server while the upgrade is being performed. 2. Insert the TrialDirector 5 Network Server Upgrade CD into a CD-Rom drive. If the installation program does not launch automatically, locate and double-click the TD5NetSetup.exe file on the CD. The TrialDirector 5 Network Server installation welcome displays. Take a few moments to read the process overview that is provided in the dialog. Click Next to continue. 3. Read the license agreement and select Yes option to continue, or select No to cancel the installation. 14
  19. 19. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 4. The installer will attempt to locate your TrialDirector 5.0.x Network installation and the network license file. If the installer is unable to locate the TrialDirector Network installation, click the Browse button and manually locate the Network.dll file located in the root directory of your TrialDirector Network installation. Click Next. 5. After the network license file has been located, the dialog box at right will be displayed, confirming the path of the file. Click Next to continue. 6. The Network.dll license file is verified by the installer. When complete the installation can continue. Click Next. 15
  20. 20. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 7. Be patient as the installation progresses. The installation will replace the TrialDirector 5.0 Network Server application files with their TrialDirector 5.1 Network Server equivalents. Additionally, any previous versions of the TrialDirector Network Client are removed from the server and replaced with a new TrialDirector 5.1 Network Client installer. 8. When the installation is complete, the success dialog will be displayed. Click Finish to complete the installation. The TrialDirector 5.0 Network server has now successfully been upgraded to version 5.1. Next, deploy the TrialDirector 5.1 Client to users workstations. 16
  21. 21. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide UPGRADING A TRIALDIRECTOR 5.0 NETWORK CLIENT TO TRIALDIRECTOR 5.1 NETWORK The TrialDirector 5.1 Network Client installation will automatically remove any TrialDirector 5.0 Network clients currently installed. It is no longer necessary to separately uninstall the Network client, prior to installing the 5.1 Client. In fact, it is recommended that administrators allow the 5.1 Client install to upgrade existing 5.0 client installations automatically. As part of the TrialDirector 5.1 Network Server upgrade, a “Client Install” folder is created on the server within the main TrialDirector Network application directory. The Client Install directory contains the Client Install.exe file. This installer must be launched from its default location on the TrialDirector 5.1 Network server to begin the client install. 1. Launch the Client Install.exe. The installer will search the local system for all TrialDirector 5.0 Network Client installations. When a 5.0 client installation has been located, its version verified, and program settings determined, the dialog box at right will appear. Take a moment to read the information displayed, then click Continue to begin the Client upgrade, or Exit to cancel. 2. In the following dialog, review the information presented and click Next to continue. 17
  22. 22. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 3. Read the license agreement and click Yes to continue, or No to cancel the installation. 4. When you are ready to begin the installation, click Next. 5. The installation will begin. Please be patient while the currently installed TrialDirector 5.0.x Network client files are removed, and the TrialDirector 5.1 Network client is installed on the workstation. 18
  23. 23. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 6. When the TrialDirector 5.1 Network Client upgrade has completed, the dialog at right will appear. Click Finish to complete the upgrade. The TrialDirector 5.1 Network Client can be launched immediately; no reboot of the workstation is required. 19
  24. 24. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS Client Connection Viewer The Client Connection Viewer utility is a new administrative tool in TrialDirector 5 Network. This utility will allow Server Administrators to determine who is using the TrialDirector 5 Network application at any given time, which makes it easy to poll users when you need to free up a license for another user. The Client Connection Viewer is accessed from the Start Menu/TrialDirector 5 Network/ Client Connection Viewer menu item. The Client Connection Viewer screen displays client connection information based on Microsoft Windows networking usernames and machine names. In the example above, five clients are currently connected to the TrialDirector Network Server. In the event that the client license limit has been reached, the server administrator would use the Client Connection Viewer utility to determine which users are attached to the TrialDirector Server in order to manage the connection count. As its name implies, the Client Connection Viewer only views current connections, it does not manage them. When all Client Access License connections have been filled and another client attempts to connect, their access will be temporarily denied. The Administrator will need to contact the currently attached users and determine who can to disconnect from the server (by exiting TrialDirector Network) to allow a different client to connect. The dialog at right is displayed if a TrialDirector 5.1 Network Client attempts to connect when all Client Access Licenses are in use. Clients are encouraged to contact the Administrator for assistance. 20
  25. 25. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide TrialDirector 5 Network Client Access License Upgrade The number of Client Access Licenses can be increased if the demand for TrialDirector 5 Network increases in your office. The TrialDirector 5 Network Client Access License Upgrade utility allows Server Administrators to easily upgrade the license count. Begin the process by contacting the inData Sales department to purchase additional Client Access Licenses. A new serial number will be created to register your TrialDirector 5.1 Network Server and increase its Client Access Licensing capacity. 1. Launch the Client Access License Upgrade Tool from the Start menu of either the administrative workstation or server. The dialog box at right will display. 2. Take a moment to read the information displayed, then click Next to begin or Cancel to exit. 3. The Client Access License Upgrade Tool will attempt to locate the network license file on the TrialDirector 5.1 Network Server. If the installer is unable to locate the TrialDirector Network installation, click Browse and manually locate the Network.dll file, (in the root directory of your TrialDirector Network installation). Click Next. When the network license file of the TrialDirector 5.1 Network Server has been detected, the Client Access License Upgrade Tool will display its path in the dialog box above. Click Next to continue. 21
  26. 26. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 4. Enter your new product Serial Number and click Next. 5. Upgrading the sever requires Registration and Activation of the new TrialDirector 5 Network serial number. This is the same registration process performed during the initial installation of the TrialDirector 5 Network server software. Note that you will now have a new serial number for your TrialDirector 5 Network installation. Your previous serial number will be invalidated when the server’s licensing has been upgraded. Click Register Online to activate via the Internet. Alternatively, call the inData Customer Support 800 number to Activate via telephone. After activation, click Next to continue. 6. A dialog box will display stating that the upgrade of the license is about to begin. Click Next to continue. 22
  27. 27. TrialDirector Network Installation Guide 7.
