7. 7. VoIP: Why Worry About Power? Downtime per year: • Public telephone network—5 minutes (99.999% available) • Typical data network GOAL—8.5 hours (99.9% available) • Typical data network ACTUAL—up to 43 hours per year (>99.5% available) Network reliability, including power, must improve when shifting voice service onto the data network No Power = No Phone Service!
 8. 8. VoIP: Why Worry About Power? Because Cisco Says You Should! “ Plan your Power: When an IP network carries voice, reliability is essential. In case of an emergency, people need to summon assistance by dialing 911. When using inline power to switches and routers, make sure they are connected to an uninterruptible power supply to guarantee dial tone if the power should go out.” Source: The Transition to IP Telephony at Cisco Systems, Cisco Systems, Inc. No Power = No Phone Service!
 9. 9. VoIP Functional Areas and Hardware Requiring UPS System Protection

Hardware -

client devices

• Networking devices

• Call-processing devices

Functional Areas-

IP Phones

Access Points

Wiring Closets

IDFs and MDFs

Data Centers

Cisco Catalyst 4500 & 6500 Series Switches
 10. 10. VoIP Hardware Requiring UPS System Protection • Client devices • Networking devices • Call-processing devices Switches & Routers • Phone service will crash without operational switches and routers • Existing switches that are upgraded to supply inline power (PoE) to phones require a larger UPS with longer backup time than they may currently have • A larger UPS will support the added power demand from the phones and supply power for hours, not minutes Tripp Lite SU2200RTXL2Ua UPS System Cisco 2800 & 3800 Integrated Services Routers
 11. 11. VoIP Hardware Requiring UPS System Protection • Client devices • Networking devices • Call-processing devices • CallManager servers • Unity voicemail servers • Related storage systems During prolonged outages. . . - UPS batteries will become exhausted - Call-processing devices should be gracefully shut down— not crash Tripp Lite SU10KRT3U UPS System Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers
 12. 12. Why is Safe Server Shutdown Essential to VoIP Applications? Without it VoIP systems are at risk for: • Corruption to. . . - Configured parameters - User settings - Call records - Voice mail • Costly potential system rebuilds

 18. 18. What is Tripp Lite PowerAlert Software? An essential power management application that: • Ensures computers are gracefully shut down during extended power failures - Saves and closes open applications - Performs an orderly OS shutdown • Prevents system corruption • Provides support for major operating systems • Installs easily with no configuration required • Is provided at no cost • Requires no additional hardware
 19. 19. PowerAlert Software is Also an Essential Management Tool • Facilitates monitoring of UPS and site conditions • Alerts managers to conditions affecting the UPS and its loads - Battery status - Load status - Incoming power conditions Includes available advanced features: • SNMP signaling to NMS • Remote access • Email notification • Alarm event actions • Script signaling
 20. 20. PowerAlert Software – Tested for Cisco VoIP Overview of successful testing on CallManager servers: • Graceful shutdown test • Low battery test • Multi-server shutdown test • Memory leak test • Processor consumption test • Call simulation (1,000 calls per hour for 24 hours) • Registry entries (ensure clean uninstall) Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers
 21. 21. Deployment Example Cisco CallManager Setup All Cisco CallManager servers are installed with PowerAlert Software (version 12) and communicate with the UPS via USB, Serial, or Network connection to the SNMPWEBCARD. In the event of power problems, the UPS instructs the PowerAlert enabled servers to shut down gracefully. The servers can be shut down simultaneously or sequentially.
