  4. 4. INTRODUCTION The telecommunications sector has followed a consumer-centric business model for the different generations of cellular technologies, focused on advancing and delivering a quality network for supporting customer requirements. While the trend continues for 4G, the communication service providers (CSPs) are, however, looking out for opportunities to tap the enterprise sector. The emergence of 5G is enabling the telecom industry to prioritize B2B services through the introduction and adoption of advanced network capabilities, including higher speed, ultra-low latency, and broader capacity. These characteristics are driving CSPs to develop new business models with a focus on the implementation of dedicated 5G networks across different enterprise verticals, creating revenue generation opportunities beyond the traditional average revenue per user (ARPU) model. Telecom regulators and governments worldwide are trying to ensure that the ongoing 5G adoptions help ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................Further, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has announced plans to standardize Release 16 and 17 in 2020, focused on accelerating the 5G activities worldwide. The 5G bouquet covers a dynamic, coherent, and flexible framework of a multitude of advanced technologies which support a diverse array of applications across sectors. It is evident that the implementation of major 5G concepts cannot be covered within a single technology and would require an integration of different capabilities for achieving its full potential as the core of the connected world of tomorrow. A combination of technologies, ranging from ......................................................................................................................... ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... . These industries prominently include manufacturing, retail, office buildings, healthcare, financial services, agriculture, and mining. The growing demand from the enterprises has led to the addition of newer type of providers in the value chain and pushed the CSPs to re-evaluate their roles in the 5G ecosystem, as shown in Figure 1. With a parallel focus on the early deployment of 5G, telecom operators and solution providers are also strategizing on building new value propositions for enterprise verticals, especially in traditionally zero customer base domains such as retail, healthcare, and small scale manufacturing. 6. 6. MARKET DRIVERS FOR 5G ENTERPRISE Driver #1: Private Network Private network refers to the deployment of an independent cellular network (with radio, core, and transmission resources) dedicated for use by an organization, as shown in Figure 2. It eliminates the dependency on a public operator, allowing enterprises to have full control on network access and gain a higher coverage, in areas where public networks are non-existent. This trend is leading to increase in the number of telecom companies in the evolved packet core (EPC) domain, as it is the major requirement for building a private network. Private LTE networks have already gained considerable importance in the telecom industry and the next step is migration towards 5G private networks. • By 2025, 5G networks will form the major part of small cell deployment as shown in Figure 3. Early Examples of Standalone 5GC Adoption Key opportunities are apparent for the companies focused on deploying private SA 5GC networks, more so for the early adopters who can optimize their network slicing strategies for streamlined operation across various use cases. Some of the early movers among CSPs and companies from various industry vertical that have deployed private 5G SA core network include: Vodafone Business launched a 5G campus network for Lufthansa Technik’s airport hangar at Hamburg. The network is in a test phase for extended reality use cases and after evaluation, the project is expected to be rolled out for Lufthansa’s other locations.(19) e.Go Factory 1, is one of the first 5G-powered manufacturing plant built in collaboration with Vodafone Germany and leveraging Ericsson Private Networks solution with 5GC and 5G New Radio solutions. It will leverage the security and real-time networking benefits across the production chain from material management to the control of autonomous vehicles.(20) Siemens and Qualcomm have set up a PoC for smart manufacturing. Qualcomm provided the 5GC while Siemens brought in the control systems and devices. The objective of the PoC was to test the operation of industrial devices such as AGVs on the 3.7-3.8GHz band.(21) Deutsche Telekom collaborated with Ericsson to build an indoor solution with autonomous logistics for the Connected Center Industry, an organization focused on new applications for logistics.(22) The Increasing Significance of 5GC Specialist Companies In March 2020, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced an open, cloud native, and SA 5GC solution for enterprise customers as well as for telecom companies. HPE’s solution will accelerate customer’s 5GC deployments for generating new revenue streams, with a pay-as-you-go service model that eliminates upfront cost and drives monetization on scale. HPE was able to develop the 5GC platform with a robust ecosystem of partners that included 5GC specialist companies Affirmed Networks and Metaswitch. The solution is expected to be available globally in the second half of 2020.(23) 5GCCOMPANIES 5G for Enterprise Applications 19
