INTRODUCTION Diarrhea is among the leading causes of preventable deaths among children WHO/UNICEF have recommended glucose based ORS The solution prevents or treats diarrhoeal dehydration. Kenyan IMCI guidelines recommend use of ORS to treat dehydration Caregivers’ knowledge on the use of ORS is thus important.
  4. 4. JUSTIFICATION  Diarrhea is among the leading causes of preventable deaths among children,  Deaths which can be evaded through use of ORT.  Assessment of caregivers’ knowledge on the use of ORS is thus important  Directly elated to reduction of mortalities due to dehydration
  5. 5. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES Main objective: To assess the knowledge of caregivers visiting the IMCI unit at Kapenguria district hospital on the use of ORS in children with diarrhea.
  6. 6. Specific objectives To assess the level of understanding of caregivers on the use of ORS To establish the relationship between level of education of caregiver and knowledge on use of ORS To determine the caregiver perception of ORS as the best treatment of diarrhea in children
  7. 7. METHODOLOGY Study area The study area was the IMCI unit at Kapenguria District Hospital, West Pokot County Target population Caregivers with children under the age of 5 years Study population The study population is caregivers bringing children with diarrhea to the unit.

Study design This was a cross-sectional descriptive study design done over the six week period at KDH. 56 caretakers were interviewed. Knowledge on Preparation, Admistration ,Duration of storage of ORS was investigated. Sampling technique A simple random sampling technique was used. Data collection Questionnaires were used to assess the knowledge of caregivers with regard to use of ORS in children with diarrhea.
  9. 9.  Eligibility Criteria Inclusion All persons bringing children with diarrhea to the facility Exclusion Caregivers bringing children with other problems not involving diarrhea. Minimization of bias Closed ended questionnaires were used Ethical considerations 1. The study was executed subject to approval by the medical superintendent. 2. All participants gave informed consent before interview. 3. Information collected was handled with confidentiality by avoiding caretaker names.
  10. 10. DATA ANALYSIS AND PRESENTATION Data was analyzed qualitatively in SPSS Findings presented in tables and charts, discussed in prose. LIMITATIONS Time constraints meant low study sample Language barrier caused difficulty

  17. 17. 76.5% of caregivers knew the existence of ORS They had varying experience on its use in treating diarrheal diseases. 76.9 came to know about ORS through contact with healthcare providers. Akrem et al found that 75.8% mothers got information pertaining to
  18. 18. 60% of the caregivers had secondary school education. A national study in Pakistan recommended on the need to accentuate the educational level ‘So that care givers are authorized to protect the children from diarrhea.’
  19. 19. 36% were found to have adequate knowledge The same information was observed to be partial in 23% respondents and inaccurate among the rest. Literacy rate showed positive association with adequacy of ORS knowledge (p<0.01).
  20. 20. CONCLUSION 1. Majority of the caregivers are aware on the existence of ORS 2. Educated caregivers have a better knowledge on ORS 3. Less than half of the caregivers have adequate knowledge on the use of ORS 4. Health care providers play a great role in increasing awareness on the use of ORS
  21. 21. RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE HOSPITAL Include sensitization on importance of ORS in their outreach activities  Use a standard material when teaching caregivers on ORS
  22. 22. RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE MINISTRY It should increase the literacy levels. Promote community sensitization on ORS and continue to avail ORS sachets to caregivers.
