In this issue, we delve into grid interoperability and how standards are only the beginning. We continue our journey to understand the Internet of Things (IoT) and look at how energy solutions were showcased as part of the IoT portfolio at Cisco Live US. We partner with SUBNET Solutions to integrate substation IT and OT device access and management, then get some insight on how the explosion of Transactive Energy is the next phase in the evolution of the grid. We finish with industry Innovation awards.

Welcome to the Cisco Connect Gride July 30, 2013

  1. 1. To forward the newsletter to a colleague or friend, click here. Interoperability for the Grid Standards are only the beginning of the journey to interoperability. In addition to cooperative cross-industry efforts and standardization, interoperability testing and certification are essential for getting the desired results. The June 2013 issue of Electricity Today Magazine features an article that covers the issues and requirements for interoperability to address the challenges of grid modernization and integration of distributed energy resources. Read the article Energy Is Part of the Internet of Things The Internet of Things is taking IP networks into new places not known for their climate- controlled environments. As a result, the very nature of networking must change. Cisco Fellow and Chief IoT Architect J. P. Vasseur tells us how this will look. See the video Learn more Energy Solutions Highlighted at Cisco Live US Cisco Live US introduced an Internet of Things (IoT) Discover program-within-a-program at Cisco Live 2013, June 23–26 in Orlando, Florida. The program was designed specifically for operational technology experts in the manufacturing, energy, utilities, and transportation industries. Topics included: Linking Information Technology and Operations Technology, Wireless Architectures and Control Applications in Process Manufacturing, and Designing Trackside and Roadside IP Infrastructure for Transportation Environments, as well as all of their safety and security requirements, both physical and cyber. Overall, the Cisco LiveIoT Pavilion demonstrated Cisco’s IoT end-to-end portfolio capabilities and application benefits, made possible by connecting the unconnected. Videos and Papers Photos Integrated and Secure Substations Cisco and SUBNET Solutions are partnering to enable the transition from traditional substation architectures to integrated and secure substation architectures. As shown in this paper, SUBNET and Cisco provide real solutions for this integration by using networking technology, physical security and cybersecurity, and standards-based interoperability. The net result to the utility company includes operational cost savings, improved reliability and

Next up, some very smart energy researchers and thinkers believe, is transactive energy.
