Tutorials.
• Very quickly, Ritesh figured that Kota was a place where one could learn coding. Over-time his
interest in programming took a back-seat.
• He even wrote a book there titled “Indian Engineering Colleges: A Complete Encyclopedia of
Top 100 Engineering Colleges”. The book became an instant hit on Flipkart.
• Ritesh then moved to Delhi in 2011 for college.

• He even sold sim cards to survive, afraid his well off family would end his entrepreneurial dreams
and summon him back home to Odisha if they knew of his struggles.
• Ritesh Agarwal was a tech freak and had a passion to travel around the world. During his travels,
the issue with budget hotels was discovered.

services in India.
• At his young age of 17, Ritesh Agarwal came up with launching Oravel Stays, later had become
OYO rooms.
• Oravel Stays- which was helpful for people to locate and book affordable hotels near them.
• Soon the realization hit that the major issue was in the non-standard services, so he updated his
old business model and converted it into a better version and re-launched it as “OYO Rooms”,
• OYO Rooms- which provides pocket-friendly rooms with standard facilities in more than 1000
hotels across India and now it is spread over the world.
10. Impact of Covid-19 on OYO
• The outbreak of the Covid-19 virus had severely
impacted the hospitality industry worldwide.
• OYO was also on the receiving end of the impact and
saw close to 60% of its business wiped away in a matter
of months.
• It also laid off close to 300 employees, towards the end
of last year.
• However, before the second wave of the pandemic in
the country, Agarwal said that its gross margin was back
to pre-covid levels.
