3. How ads on many websites work
1. The website owner contracts with an ad network to deliver advertising.
2. The ad network gives the website owner code to place that will deliver
ads
3. When the web page is loaded – content from both the website owner
and the ad network show up in their proper places on the page.

4. What do ad filters do?
 They detect and then block the loading of advertisements. They block
based on:
 Content from known ad networks
 Some heuristic analysis
 User defined filters

7. Why not block ads?
 Hurts web content providers fiscally
 Creates problems with some content
 Possibly viewed as censorship

8. Why block ads?
 Focuses on content
 Stymies behavioral tracking
 Protects computers from malware

10. Not all filters are created equal
 Some stop development and become outdated
 Some say are ad blockers, but instead put their own ads in replacing the
ad networks
 Some actually allow companies to purchase spots on their white list
