  2. 2. Presentation Overview ● UCSF & the Library ● The decision to relocate and deaccession UCSF microforms ● UCSF & Internet Archive’s partnership to increase access ● Internet Archive & Open Library
  3. 3. UCSF & the Library ● Graduate level, health sciences only campus ● 3,114 students ● 6,264 academic staff & faculty ● As of 2017, the Library has: ○ 1,195,444 volumes (all formats) ○ 566,331 ebooks ○ 64,283 serial titles (all formats)
  4. 4. UCSF Microformats ● Size of collection: over 12,500 cataloged items ○ Microfiche, microfilm, micro-opaque ● No operational microformat readers for over a decade ● Space was slated for repurposing by Special Collections & Archives

UCSF Microformat Deaccessioning Hiccups: ● Unreliable metadata = inventory issues & made some items ineligible for sending offsite ● Shared purchase agreements = consortial taskforce End result: ● 25% of microforms sent to offsite storage facility ● 75% deemed duplicative of existing UCSF & UC holdings
