  1. 1. Music Video Comparison Nicki Menaj vs Chrisitna Perri
  2. 2. Mise-en-scene (location, props, costume, lighting) Minaj is in a studio with bright lighting with a motorbike made of ice that is melting and a bright pink car. Camera shots, movement and position The camera is constantly switching between close ups of the artist’s face and close ups of the melting motorbike. Relationship between music & visuals (editing) The music is happy and bubbly and the visuals are constantly bright. Relationship between music & lyrics The music relates to the lyrics as the music is bubbly and happy which matches most of the lyrics.
  3. 3. Mise-en-scene (location, props, costume, lighting) They are in a studio with bright lighting and speakers made of ice which is melting. Camera shots, movement and position The camera is constantly switching between different close ups of the artist and dancers and the melting speakers. Relationship between music & visuals (editing) The music is still very bright, happy and bubbly but the visuals appear to be suggesting male gaze with the artist and dancers wearing only a tank top and shorts which are too small so that their chest and pants are on show. Relationship between music & lyrics The music and lyrics are still complimenting each other with the pop theme of being happy bright and bubbly.
  4. 4. Mise-en-scene (location, props, costume, lighting) They are in a dark room with no lighting except for the glowing floor panels and feathers all over the floor. Certain parts of the artist and dancers, such as their leotards mouth and eyes are also glowing. Camera shots, movement and position The camera is constantly on either a close up of the dancers glowing body parts or of the men, who are just sitting in chairs while woman dance around them. Relationship between music & visuals (editing) The music is still very bright, happy and bubbly but the visuals are very dark where there is no lighting in the studio. Relationship between music & lyrics The lyrics are still quite pop based, being light and bubbly which links to the music which is also bright and bubbly.

Camera shots, movement and position The camera is slowly panning to the right or showing close ups of the artists face panning away from here face. Relationship between music & visuals (editing) The visuals are very dark and dull and the music is also very sad, depressing, and lonely. Relationship between music & lyrics The music is very sad, depressing and lonely and the lyrics match this perfectly.

Camera shots, movement and position The camera is moving with the artist and is facing her face on. Relationship between music & visuals (editing) The visuals are very dark and dull and the music is also very sad, depressing, and lonely. Relationship between music & lyrics The music is very sad, depressing and lonely and the lyrics match this perfectly.

Mise-en-scene (location, props, costume, lighting) there is no setting in this scene as it seems to be a flashback, the lighting is still dark and dull and the artist and the person the song is about are standing under an umbrella. Camera shots, movement and position The camera is centered between the two people on screen, and doesn’t have much music. Relationship between music & visuals (editing) The visuals are very dark and dull and the music is also very sad, depressing, and lonely. Relationship between music & lyrics The music is very sad, depressing and lonely and the lyrics match this perfectly.
  8. 8. What representations are created? Nicki Menaj Video… Christina Perri Video… This video shows a negative and very sexual representation of women, and doesn’t seem to have a story. This video shows a negative representation of men, as it tells the story of 1 man who “collected the hearts of different women and put them in a jar”.
  9. 9. Compare the two video’s using the technical terms In Nicki Minaj’s video she shows a very negative representation of women through mise-en-scene (costume) whereas in Chrisitna Perri’s video she shows a negative representation of men via the use of story and plot in her music video.
