Curriculum development

  1. 1. NATIE DEME D. DUTONGCURRICULUM DEVELOPMENTPhilosophical Foundation The Learner-Friendly High School of Anda is based on the philosophy of Progressivismbecause it is concerned in the development of a learner into a becoming enlightened citizens ofa democratic society. It is in response to the student’s needs and in relation to their personallives and experiences and to cope up with the impermanence of life and inevitability of change. The curriculum is focused on the students’ interest, human problems and affairs. So studentsare exposed to many new scientific, technological and social developments reflecting thatprogress and change are fundamental. They solve problems in the classroom similar to thosethey will encounter outside of the school house. This is what we call “learning by doing” by thephilosopher John Dewey.Psychological Foundation The basis in the foundation of this school is the Behavioral Psychology. This is becausewe are concerned in the modification and shaping of student’s behavior by providing afavorable environment. Since, we believed that the student is the product of their environment. The students having the complex combinations of matter that acts only in response to theinternally or externally generated physical stimuli in the environment. So, in order to get thedesired responses, physical variables like light, temperature, arrangement of furniture, size andquantity of visual aids have to be controlled.Historical Foundation In 1999 the Philippine government through the Department of Education, the localgovernment units and the United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF) initiated the Child-FriendlySchool System (CFSS). It is already been piloted in elementary and secondary schools starting2006. The Learner-Friendly High School which is a child-centered school has been attributed tothe influence of the progressive educational psychologist wherein the learner is the center ofeducative process. One of those progressivist is John Dewey, wherein he believes that reflectivethinking is a means that unifies curricular elements. Thought is not derived from action buttested by application. Progresivist teacher employ experiential methods- they believed that onelearns by doing. One of these methods is the problem-solving method which makes us ofscientific method. Other “hands-on-minds-on” teaching methodology is the use of field tripsduring which students interacts with nature or society. Teachers also stimulate studentsthrough thought-provoking games and puzzles.1

  3. 3. NATIE DEME D. DUTONGCURRICULUM DEVELOPMENTIntroduction As one of the descendants of Don Vicente Cacho of Anda and a part owner of the 12hectare land we inherited, an idea of putting up a school came into my mind. The proposedname of the school I am going to establish will be Learner-Friendly High School of Andalocated in Roxas, Anda, Pangasinan where I was born. It was named as such because it willadopt a child-friendly school system (CFSS ) that the Philippine governmen through theDepartment of Education, the local government units and UNICEF(United Nations ChildrensFund) has initiated. It is a Secondary School that is adopting the K-12 curriculum, wherein weare offering technical instructions and applications on the Senior High. It is in response to thepolicy of the State to establish and maintain a complete, adequate and integrated system ofeducation relevant to the goals of national development. After studying the feasibility study of this project, it was finally established on August8,2012 for the purpose of supplying the demand for a quality education that can cope up thechanging needs of the learners in Anda and their growing population. Since Anda is no longeran isolated island, it is already progressing, so there is a need to educate the youth on howthey can develop their hometown and to improve their standard of living. It is to save themfrom traveling to other place like Alaminos City just to acquire knowledge if we can providewhat they need. An education that could make a big difference in the life of the youth as wellas to their families and communities where they belong, by rendering best services andproviding an environment conducive to learning and growth. The school was constructed alongwith other facilities in a 12 hectare land composing of ricefield, a fishpond with a mangrove onthe nearby seashore, a botanical garden and hundreds of fruitbearing trees. Our Logo3
  4. 4. NATIE DEME D. DUTONGCURRICULUM DEVELOPMENTThe Meaning of my LogoThe learner is in the center because he is our first and foremost concern, his interest, welfareand needs. The boat symbolizes a journey, a dynamic process, a learning experience with thepresence of waves, the inequality of surface that symbolizes the problems encountered by thelearner during his journey, where he can learn many things. The book being a source ofinformation, knowledge, facts, theories and principles that will guide the learner. It will be thesource of basic learning though it sounds traditional but it will be used in a progressiveapproach. It is where the learner can learn the survival techniques while on journey…and tolearn fom his own mistakes. The olive leaves represents peace and hope, which can bemanifest in my school because it is a learner-friendly, with an environment surrounded bynature, the trees and plants and the sea.The stars as a sign of light, honour and a pre-eminentor exceptionally brilliant. It is what I want my school to be, what my teachers to be, and whatkind of learner to be.The Circle symbolizes the continuity of education, a never ending process. It does’nt mean that if one finishes a stage, he will stop already. The man standing on a boatsurrounded by waters is the student that we wish to educate. The water is rich with resourceswhere he can get the needed experiences, knowledge and serve also as a practiceground…learn how to swim to the ever changing waves in our environment.I have chosen the boat and the water in my logo to incorporate that my school was located inAnda, an island surrounded by water. And some of the vocational course I am offering arerelated to sea water like the Fish Culture, Fish Capture and Fish Preservation with the use ofmodern technology.4
