Unique Selling Point

  2. 2. In order to stand out and be individual, most music videos consist of their artist/band using their own unique selling point. This can be shown in many forms, whether it be a recurring image used across their music videos, a certain item of clothing or makeup or even a lyric that is said at the start of their video. This is to establish their own individual, unique style so they are remembered and recognised. Many artists/bands have a USP to stand out compared to their other fellow artists from the same genre. It is an effective way to be identified and we believe including something like this will make our video stand out as well.
  3. 3. Our music video consists of an indie pop song, and our inspiration is Lana Del Rey who uses intertextual references frequently throughout her music, whether it is in the lyrics or visually in a music video. We believe that many artisits in our chosen genre all have a unique, individualistic style whereby they have a retro, vintage theme. Therefore, we have decided to use Audrey Hepburn’s look to include in our music video. We believe the sunglasses, big hair and vintage scarf style will enable our video to stand out against other indie pop videos. The look is very glamorous, which appeals to our young target audience and it is also considered to be very trendy, thus potentially making our music video very picturesque and effective.
  4. 4. {Holden Caulfield – The Catcher in the Rye The red hunting hat is something our group first discovered when we wanted to include some intertextual reference. We believe the protagonist from this specific novel represents individualism and an own unique sense of style. We thought the red hat could symbolise lost love or heart ache which links to the lyrics of our chosen song ‘Let’s Restart’ and generally coincides with the topic of many indie pop tracks, as they mainly focus on relationships or love. This also interlinks with suggestions made in Goodwin’s theory of including intertextual references within music videos.
