This document summarizes the tasks and roles of each group member in creating a horror media product. It discusses how they used props like fake blood and music to develop the horror genre. It also notes that the target audience is 16-24 year old females and that the characters are students to help audience connection. The document reflects on learning sound engineering skills and how planning and communication were important to effective group work.
2. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media product?
We used various props in order to convey the genre of horror to
our target audience, such as fake blood and a power drill. From
all of the opening sequences that myself and group members
gathered, I was able to deduce that music and lighting plays a
key factor in a horror movie. When we recorded our opening
sequence, we ensured that the locations were dark whilst
filming in the evening in order to create an eerie, scary
atmosphere.
The majority of horror films tend to have the same sort of music
which consists usually of an organ playing high notes with the
sound of a low, hollow drum. I will try and incorporate this type
of sound into our final media product to match the
horror/thriller genre . An example of the type of soundtrack
used is:
3. a) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
b) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
a) Some people tend to hold a stereotypical view that
the majority of murderers are male. Having said that,
we chose to reverse the role of the murderer in our
media product to be a female.
b) I think that our product would most likely be
distributed by Lionsgate Entertainment. As it is a well
known, successful and independent film and
television distribution company, it would best suit
our media product due to the fact that they distibute
many horror films such as Saw and Insidious.
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
According to the information gathered
from out questionnaire, focus group
survey and secondary research, the
audience of out media product would be
16-24 year old females.
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
Before filming, we allocated specific roles
to each individual member of our group.
We chose the main characters to be
young students in their late teens. This
allows our target audience to be able to
have a connection and empathize with
the characters throughout the scenes.
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
As I was assigned the role of
‘Sound person’, my job was to
use the fishpole, microphone
and headphones to pick up any
sound required in the opening
sequence, such as dialogue.
Prior to carrying out the main
task, I had minimal knowledge
as to what the sound persons’
role was. As of now, I am fully
aware that the sound person
plays an important position
whilst filming, and in the media
industry itself.
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression to the full product?
I have learnt that time management and
communication are the key aspects of working
as a group to produce an adequate media
product. I found the preliminary task very
beneficial as it gave me an insight as to how
things were to be carried out for the final
product. Also, planning helped us to keep to a
orderly schedule saving us a lot of hours as
well as keeping things organised.
