“My horses and I have a lot in common - we
were all once broken and are now being made
beautiful in His love. I’m on a God-given trail
ride to make a difference in the lives of kids &
families in “tough spots”.
Nanette Foster-Rothermel has been a horse lover
since age 7 and a Therapeutic Foster Care Parent
(aka G-Mom) for over 10 years. She is the lead Ther-
apeutic Family and Equine Assisted Counseling and
Coaching Founder of Autumn Run Stables’ programs for kids & families
in “tough spots”; Equine Specialist and founder of A Horse Adventure
Equine Assisted Counseling programs for family attachment-focused
trauma informed counseling for the past 12 years; Lead instructor/
Founder of Autumn Run Stables Training To Love Horse-gal-ship, and
author of the blog homemakinghorsefarmstyle. While she’s involved in
multiple programs, all are
following one clear vision
to help families get healthy
again and transform hearts
for true life change
Vision: Horses Carry
Hearts to Jesus.
The one thing that changes
everything in counseling the
wounded is Jesus. Working
with horses, we apply Biblical truths to find freedom
from wounds and life-controlling issues, so that we can live the life
Jesus died for us to live.
On a great God-given adventure to live-out her life verse
“Stir-up others to love and good works” Heb 10:24
Nanette has a unique way to engage with people at the heart igniting a
true passion as she shares what God shows her about horse-human rela-
tionships in ways that bring restoration and health to kids & families in
“tough spots”. Her approach is real, sometimes raw and in-your-face, but
always sprinkled with joy beyond cir-
cumstances. She shares stories of hope
as she travels along her God-designed
breadcrumb trail with sack of potatoes
intersections stirring-up others to choose
love and challenge them to be too much
beauty for the world to resist!

Why Horses?
Autumn Run Stables’ kids & families horse-
style counseling & coaching programs
open up a whole new field of solutions for
kids & families in “tough spots”. Working
with horses helps produce life changes you
didn’t even know were possible!
“Horses stand in the gap for
these kids & families. They
become their voice and their
visual canvas expressing
their past hurts, unhealthy
habits, unmet needs, and
fears. And, best of all, they help
show us who we can become on the other side of life
challenges. Our horse farm is a workshop providing a
space for hope and heart healing.”-nanette foster-rothermel
Horse sight
Horses see straight to the heart – not outside appearances or outward
disguises. There is no hiding, no lying, and no pretending with horses. It’s
about real relationships. Partnering with horses provides clients with over 1,000
pounds of instant feedback and a very large mirror reflecting their thoughts
and learned behaviors. It’s a real-time connection between the behavior they
choose and the reactions they get. This type of experiential learning engages
kids & families intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. It challenges
clients to stretch beyond comfort zones encouraging authentic empowerment
for everyday life.
LessTalk, More Action
It’s time for a different approach. We are a new team of treatment partners
ready to meet kids & families right at their need and walk with them as they
move from cycles of disruption to amazing places of peace and harmony
in the arena of life. Research shows that kids working through attachment
issues, past trauma, anxiety, opposition, depression, and sensory processing
development delays most often do not have the language needed to do talk
therapy. For kids & families in “tough spots”, talking and verbally expressing
feelings is tough territory for these kids, as they lack the language and the
needed skills to activate the attachment they so desperately need.
“Our horses walk alongside kids & families helping them
“Train-Up” life skills leading to success. Our barn is a
workshop where we get to practice trust, safety, managing
emotions, pro-actively identifying triggers behind
behaviors, handling life change, and discovering new
positive responses to move from chaos to calm”
-nanette foster-rothermel
Engage, Play, Activate!
Kids and families learn best when actively engaged and physically involved. This
is why Equine Assisted Coaching and Counseling (EACC) is a great modality
for this core population. We set up experiential learning exercises that dive
into the heart of the issues we know exist for disordered attachment, trauma
backgrounds, and other life-controlling issues. Working with horses challenges us
to connect, trust, and “train-up” to solve problems and move beyond those things
holding us back. As we work along side our horses, they “nudge” us beyond
what we see and challenge us to move out in freedom to become all we can be.
Our Goal is to be the Capital Region’s #1 Equine
Assisted Counseling & Coaching Resource
We partner with local families, schools, mental health care professionals, Office
of Children & Family Services; foster care agencies, residential group homes,
and Churches to incorporate EACC as a way of healing.
We see things differently here…
• We are on a life-giving mission for our kids & families. While the world
tells them they are not valued, there is no hope, they can never move beyond
the struggles they are currently facing, it will only get worse…We believe
there is hope and hearts can be transformed when we learn how to see our life
experiences as stepping stones to becoming the life-giving leaders we are meant
to be.
• We are committed to leave a life-saving legacy for Horses. The horses
in our program are horses thought to be worthless from a world’s viewpoint;
however, they are found to be priceless treasures here at our farm. Horses are
amazing helpers who instinctively know how to see our heart, read our emotions,
and help us heal as we work with them. We choose to see the God-given potential
in each and every horse and share their life story to help kids, families and
individuals be inspired to discover the life they are meant to live.
Our Farm Is A Workshop Where We Get To Practice Relationships.
We exist to teach kids & families how to form healthy relationships, thrive in their
environment, express themselves in positive ways, and re-engage with their families,
friends, schools, and develop new skills to help them be the difference they want to see
in the world. Currently, our programs include...
A Space For Hope: Therapeutic Equine Assisted Attachment-
Focused & Trauma Informed Counseling and Coaching
Providing equine learning opportunities allowing kids & families to practice
relationships and develop skills in establishing safety, regulating emotions, building
attachment, and redeeming traumatic experiences. We know parenting (foster care,
adoptive, and birth parents) and counseling kids from neglect, abuse, and attachment
trauma is tough - we want to walk the trail with you.
Reading Writing & Horse Training
Our Horse as Teacher School-Based Therapeutic Support for kids, teachers, school
counselors helps with challenging classroom behaviors such as opposition, depression,
and anxiety. Helping kids, families, and teachers expand their skills in regulating
emotions, identifying triggers, and skill developing for more proactive outcomes.
Walking Wounded: Equine Assisted Counseling & Coaching
We are blazing a trail through life-controlling issues like self-harm, addictions, sexual
& physical abuse, anxiety, and depression. Horses help us move beyond behaviors to
discover the root causes leading to true life change.
Finding Home: Equine Assisted Coaching & Counseling for
Military Families
Skill-based coaching for the returning home soldier and family. Our horses help
navigate marriage and family relationship land mines with a goal to reestablish
connections and clarify roles leading to successful reintegration.
Unbridled: Equine Assisted Transition Coaching for Women
Returning Home From Prison
Our horses know all about second chances on life, which makes them great partners
for women transitioning home. Horses challenge us to be our best self. They help
build confidence and empower us to find true freedom that lasts.
