Editor's Notes

  • there are few issues facing cities today more serious than the displacement of longstanding communities that is occurring alongside rapid development and growth.
In the US, we are facing a serious crisis of housing affordability, with over 30% of renters in cities like Los Angeles and New York being severely cost burden, spending over 50% of their income on rent
over one million tenants in nye are facing displacement
one of the lesser told stories of this displacement is that landlords use harassment and neglecting to make repairs as tactics to force people out of their homes and convert their apartments
  • when we started JustFix we were interested in this idea of building a more equitable new york. and taking an inclusive approach to developing technology and data by centering the communities we seek to serve in our design and development process.
  • in nye alone, over one million renters live in deficient housing with 3 or more violations.
    with serious health repercussions
  • when we practiced building with and saw this issue from a tenants perspective, the process to getting a resolution was extremely complex and disjointed
  • including the fact that
and tenants facing informal evictions that brought their landlords to court after being harassed or not getting repairs made, also received no representation
  • built justfix to directly address this issue
  • if we stopped here, that would be impressive impact and a great civic tech story
