  5. 5. Security Things to think about… Your bank account in 15 minutes… • Hack your email using Facebook and internet searches • Get your email address and where you bank • Go to your bank website i.e. BofA.com • Reset password, send to email • Log into bank account, transfer funds
  6. 6. • Nothing online is private Things to think about… • Once posted, it becomes the public domain. Assume that EVERYONE can and will read it, even if it is marked as private Be careful what you post because:
  7. 7. • 70 % of hiring managers reject applicants based on information found online at social media sites and google (Washington Post, 1/28/2010) Things to think about… • Ellen Simonetti – Fired from Delta for disparaging blogs on her website “Diary of a Flight Attendant” even though she did not specifically name Delta as her employer What you post as it may affect you professionally • Conner Riley – Offered a job at Cisco. Tweeted that she hated the work and was not hired • Dan Leone – Fired from the Philadelphia Eagles for posting his thoughts on a player trade.
  8. 8. • Is the topic appropriate for EVERYONE to see … friends, family and employers included. Things to think about… • Is the topic appropriate for the media you are using? While posting, ask yourself… • Are you posting during working hours? • Sometimes when you post is as important as what you post
  9. 9. ManageYour Profile • Add a picture • Use key words in your profile – Mortgage insurance, closings, policies etc… • Ask people to join you and/or your group • Personalize your social media URL – change numbers into name – http://www.linkedin.com/in/mxiong • Participate in online groups
  10. 10. • Be careful of what you post – it may affect your personal and professional career Recap • Be careful what information you allow others to see • Make sure you use the appropriate medium for what you are going to post • Manage your profile to make it easier for people to find you
