  9. 9. DSS v6 softwareThe Open-E Data Storage Software V6 (DSS V6) is a unified file and block storagemanagement operating system (OS) that provides Network Attached Storage (NAS),iSCSI, InfiniBand and Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) functionality. This product contains a one year free of charge Standard Support.Open-E DSS V6 provides superior performance, security, and scalability at a fractionof the cost of alternative storage offerings. Advanced features of Open-E DSS V6include Data and Volume Replication, Volume Snapshot, Automatic Failover for iSCSIVolumes, WORM and NDMP.Additionally, Open-E DSS V6 supports a wide variety of hardware RAID platformsfrom the industry’s leading names. The versatility of the Open-E DSS V6 also allowsusers to combine NAS systems with iSCSI SAN systems, and provides built-in virusprotection, while enabling the connection of multiple Network Interface Controllers, including Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel and InfiniBand. 9
  10. 10. Business Continuity Boot from LUNBooting from highly availableiSCSI LUN with Open-E DSS V6 viaStorage Area Network (SAN)A dynamic increase of datavolumes leads to greater thehardware requirements andgreater power consumption -forces us to search for newsolutions that can reduce thecosts associated with this. So, every new chance tosignificantly reduce costs becauseof hardware power usage andcooling requirements or causedby the time spent on ITadministration is more thanwelcome in most organizations. 10
  11. 11. Business Continuity iSCSI failoverFailover is an excellent way to implement High Availability. It is a work mode using twoOpen-E Data Storage Software V6 servers (primary and secondary). In the event the primaryserver fails, the secondary server which has a full up-to-date copy of the data takes over asthe file server.Failover begins withcontinuously moving thedata store on the mainserver to secondaryserver.Data transfer is realizedby volume replication onthe iSCSI level. 11
  12. 12. Business Continuity NFS failover (optional)High availability is crucial to many applications.Despite using high-quality hardware andsuperior connection, any node (network, server, storage equipment, etc) is still a subject forcrashes due to power shortages, communication and equipment faults, fireincidents, maintenance problems or a humanfactor, which results in loss of all activeconnections and data transactions as well as inservice termination. In case the provided services are structured sothat they aren’t dependent on the availability ofa single node, a redundant node (or nodes)should be present. When aware of the original node failure, theseredundant nodes could continue serving clients, effectively replacing the missing node. 12
