[ DRIVING TOWARDS A DISRUPTION ] [ HBS CASE STUDY ANALYSYS ] The main essence of this case study is to analyze the dramatic changes that are happening within the MBA program and the innovation in management education and will it have any effect on HBS MBA program which is tied strongly to the legacies of the pivotal year 1924.   2. 2. 1. SYNOPSIS OF THE CASE. CASE STUDY is all about the ‘disruption of management education’. It is about the changing model of the management education and its effects and how the premium business school like Harvard Business School can tackle the day to day changes. The Harvard graduate school of Business Administration was founded in 1908 under Dean Edwin F. Gay. With approval of president of Harvard University Charles he established first MBA program .Clayton Christensen, the professor at Harvard Business School suggested that the established model of management education is heading towards trouble but he also said that the top management programs can get over this problem. The case also highlights about the various features of Harvard which gives it a distinct edge as against the competitors. First it throws light on the academics which is more focused on International Business and experiential learning. Due to a great curriculum and methodology being followed, there has been rise in the admissions from 30 in the first batch to 9000 in the batch of 2009-2011. It is interesting to note that Harvard grads are always in the demand and this fact is evident from the pay package which these students receive. The median salary which they receive is around 120000 $. Harvard gives a field based education to their students and they used different technology in the classroom, and come up with new program of HBSi which is Harvard Business School Interactive. Their product line were articles, cases, role-playing exercise, simulators books and handful of pre-matriculation online courses and they have their own Harvard Business review group. Massive online open courses that had changed the landscape for management education and they have come up with different online courses which were free and that have motivated students around the world. They have also started new course which was management education for non-managers in which they teach business skill to students and they don’t give full institutional program training. The corporate learning primarily targeted fortune 1000 businesses touting its blended learning which mixed technology with live instruction. This case study also details the innovations in education businesses which in present and in future have consequences on HBS MBA Program such as online degree programs, massive online open courses and company’s own corporate training facilities and management education for non-managers which focuses on delivering and developing business skills to students with no need for a full institutional course.
  3. 3. 2. WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF PERFORMANCE? DOES THE HBS PRODUCT OVER SERVE? The dimensions of performance are  Quality of Education-The quality of their education is excellent, as education is what matters which is defined by quality of their cases which world are using are the articles published by them.  Flexibility-Flexibility is highly important for an organization. Change is necessity of life. So changing education system with changing competitive world is important. Harvard is doing so every year.  Student retention-Study is what retain student with the college and for that education/study quality should be good, student should effectively understand each and everything, the teaching methods should be good for the enhancement of student’s carrier. . Yes HBS to some extent is over serving as it is providing extra materials and creating extra pressure on students, the curriculum HBS adopted is very enlarge, beside this HBS put the beyond quality in his students and make them the best. 3. IF YOU THINK HBS IS INSULATED FROM DISRUPTION, ARE THE CIRCUMSTANCES RIGHT MORE BROADLY IN THE INDUSTRY. DOES IT HAVE A LONG TERM IMPACT ON HBS? Yes, HBS is insulated from disruption as, we know that HBS is the most premium business school in the world and it has the ability to come over any kind of disruption. The plus points of HBS are  Their alumni are strong and well developed. It’s not easy to build a strong network but once made its very difficult to break it. Network has become a strength for HBS  They have their own publishing house which supports them in branding and this thing is lacking in other institutes.  HBS publishes their own case studies and articles which are even used by other institutes for learning purpose.  They have launched online courses to compete with other institutes. This shows their tendency to be according to current trends.
  4. 4. The present scenario and the circumstances according to the case study, are not that good for HBS. Now there are so many threats to the HBS which occurred in terms of his competitor’s like Stanford university, Princeton university, university of phoenix and university of Columbia and so on. A part from this the big companies like GE, Deloitte and Goldman Sachs have started their own universities for teaching the management education to their employees. Now, they do not have to go to any management school for hiring because of which the management institutes will suffer a lot. But, it will not have a long term effect on HBS for sure because HBS have also started some new and innovative management programs that are of a short-term and very effective and useful for the working people and employees. Like AMP, GMP, OMP etc. HBS have also started some online management programs also which are not AS SUCCESSFUL as their on-campus programs but they know how to make them successful. In so many ways HBS have tied strongly to its legacies of the pivotal year 1924’. The ALUMNI network is another thing which makes HBS different from others. They are still on the top as the revenue has increased to $509 million in 2011 as compare to $467 million in 2010. A sharp increase in total assets. There are many institutes and companies that buys HBS cases and books. The quality of students are better. The median salary of HBS students is more than any other institutes. HBS still are the king of management education and a pioneer in itself.
