  3. 3. Project OverviewProject OverviewTrans Studio is the worlds 3rd largest indoor theme park located in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The 20,000 m2wide and 20 meters high indoor theme park opened to the public September 9, 2009.Following the success of Trans Studio, a science center is being planned to open in Bandung, Indonesia. The plannedscience center to be called “Trans Studio Science Center”.The Trans Studio Science Center to be 1330 m2 (14,330 sq. ft.). The Trans Studio Science Center is to be of high designand high interactivity, similar in modality to the Singapore Science Center. The Science Center is to be designed and fabricated locally whenever possible with specialty pieces being purchased whennecessary.3

  6. 6. Project OverviewContentTrans Studio Science Center, Mission StatementThe mission of the Trans Studio Science Center is to educate and excitevisitors about science. The Science Center will spark interest in sciencethrough fun interactive exhibits.Layers of ContentWe all learn from simple to complex, groupings of simple concepts buildto form complex ideas. The science center will follow the same model of“easy access”, exhibits and content will be welcoming and easilyaccessible. As visitors travel through the Trans Studio Science Center, the simple concepts will build to of complex ideas.Tech TagEvery visitor will have a personalized experience through the sciencecenter. The visitor’s entrance ticket will serve as their “passport” to apersonalized experience. Visitors can compare their performance to theirfriends. At the end of the experience visitors can take home a print outof their “Trans Studio Passport”5
  7. 7. Project OverviewExhibition FiltersExhibition FiltersAn exhibition filter is a guiding principle by which exhibits are chosen or rejected. The filters become a criteria by which the exhibitsare judged to be included as part of the overall exhibition.Trans Studio Science Center, Exhibition Filters:• Real Science• Interactive• A clean, modern aesthetic• Exhibits will be Hands On, Body On and Minds On• The exhibits will be a mixture of modality, fine motor and gross motor skills• Exhibits will be discovery based vs. didactic• Wherever possible exhibits will be open ended with multiple outcomes• The voice of the Science Center will be and accepting and welcoming• Exhibits will incorporate the real material of the topic• Making the real magical vs making the real world magic• The exhibits will be Immediate and unambiguous• Exhibits will be grouped by topic, with connections between disciplines• Sight lines between disciplines will be orchestrated• Exhibits will be a mixture of group and solo activities• Exhibits will be welcoming• The entry exhibits will be comprised of “Safe or dangerous” exhibits, they may look dangerous, but are safe and fun• Exhibits and environments will be built with exposed fasteners and connections, reinforcing the idea of revealing the nature of things7

  9. 9. Project OverviewUmbrella Concept - Revealing the InvisibleUmbrella Concept - Revealing the InvisibleVisitors will expose the hidden world of science. Throughthe tools of science; the secrets of atoms, optical illusions, black holes, microscopic bugs and light will be exposed tothe visitor.  Visitors will accomplish feats they neverthought possible ! Lift a safe, lay on a bed of nails anddefy gravity.Look through a microscope and see a carving in the eyeof a needle, watch a movie and gain an understanding ofthe magnitude of the universe.  The secrets of “Revealingthe Invisible”, will be exposed through a treasure hunt, the“secrets of science hunt.”9

  16. 16. Safe or DangerousSafe or DangerousMany surveys of visitors to Science Centers have shownthat visitors are intimidated by science. Often surveyscome back with comments such as “I am no good atscience”, “I am scared of science”, “I am afraid I may givethe wrong answer”. With these comments in mind wehave created the Safe Danger Zone. Here visitors canbuild trust and confidence. It may look scary, but try itand you will have fun!Yes, a Bed of Nails, looks scary, but try it, no it doesn’thurt and through the experience you will learn why youdon’t get hurt.Wow ExhibitsBed of nailsExhibitsRope SquirterPin WallLariat ChainTurntableBall LauncherStrobe StringRecollectionsBed of NailsCatenary Arch5

  64. 64. Lenses bend light. The ten small slits in thedrum create ten beams of white light. Put theconvex lens near the drum so that severalbeams of light shine out through the curvedside. The convex lens bends the light to bringthe beams together.Replace the convex lens with the concavelens making sure that the light shines outthrough the curved side of the lens. Theconcave lens makes the beams spread outUse the curved mirrors to reflect severalbeams of the white light. A Mirror curved oneway brings the reflected beams together.acting like a convex lens. A mirror curved theother way spreads the beams apart acting likea concave lens.Colored filters block some colors of light. Puta filter in front of the red, blue and greenlights to see what colors pase through thecolored plastic. Notice what colors areblockedStand a flat mirror in the beam of red light.Move the mirror around ;until you reflect thered light onto the white screen below thesign. Use another mirror to overlap greenlight with the red light on the screen. Noticethat the colors combine to make yellow.Use the mirrors to mix blue light with redlight. Try combining blue and green. Whathappens if you mix all three colors.Make colored shadows by putting yourfinger several inches in front of the screenwhere two or more colors overlap.Prisms separate colors that make up whitelight Slowly rotate a pism in the path of asingle beam of white light until you seerainbow colors fan out across the table.TO DO AND NOTICELIGHT ISLANDLorepta eruptat inihillatem ium et el inis explit..64
