  2. 2. COFFEE<br /><ul><li>Coffee consumption began in China and the Middle East
  3. 3. The domestication of coffee was first accomplished in Yemen
  4. 4. At first coffee was used to keep holy men awake for worship
  5. 5. For a very long time coffee was used for religious rituals for the Buddhists and Muslims
  6. 6. Coffee was considered a Muslims’ drink, like chocolate was for Catholics</li></li></ul><li><ul><li>Christopher Columbus came across a Mayan canoe with chocolate beans inside
  7. 7. The Mayans called these bean looking objects ka-ka-wa, the Aztecs then changed the name to cacao, and the Spanish changed it to chocolate
  8. 8. At first chocolate was considered an intoxicating drink, and was essentially used for the psychological effects
  9. 9. Chocolate was normally drunk with chilepeppers, and tasted like bitter almond
  10. 10. Chocolate was so rare that it was frequently used as money for the purchase of goods</li></ul>CHOCOLATE<br />
  11. 11. TOBACCO<br /><ul><li>During Columbus’s first trip to the Americas he noticed Indians smoking tobacco
  12. 12. The natives cooked, smoke, ate, snorted and even possibly used tobacco as a weapon in war
  13. 13. Spanish soldiers talked about the natives coming out to attack them chewing herbs and spitting the juice at them
  14. 14. European sailors were the first to try out tobacco and bring it back to Europe, the Middle East, and even China
  15. 15. At first tobacco was seen as a tool the natives used for religious purposes and this thought invoked many laws restricting the use of tobacco</li>
