Japan Builds an Empire <ul><li>Allies; The Great Depression and high foreign tariffs on Japanese goods led to industrial decline, unemployment and political discontent in Japan. </li></ul><ul><li>Germany; Explosive population growth in Japan caused many Japanese to look to Manchuria as a source of underdeveloped land and other resources. </li></ul><ul><li>Multi-party government; After the Manchurian Incident, Japan made Manchukuo a puppet state. </li></ul><ul><li>Europe; Chinese Nationalist leader Jiang Jieshi and Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong set aside their differences to fight the Japanese in the Japan-Chinese war. </li></ul>
