  5. 5. History : 8TH – 13TH Century • Murano became the centre of glass. • Glass makers were ordered to move foundries to the island of Murano to safeguard the fire prone Venetian Republic. • Murano Glassmakers became the most prominent citizens. • Glass-making practices underwent great evolution.
  6. 6. History : 14th Century • Murano Glassmakers became powerful and enjoyed many privileges. • They could wear swords and marry their daughters into Italy’s royal families • However, were not allowed to leave Venetian Republic to keep glass blowing a secret.

History : 17th - 20th Century • In 17th century, exporting of Murano glass mirrors began. • By early 19th century, the industry underwent a serious decline, because of competition from Chinese glass • With the onset of the 20th century, Murano Glass achieved unprecedented name and recognition across the world, with new-designers using age old techniques to create new contemporary designs.
