The telephone was invented in 1870 by two inventors, Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell, who both filed patents for their inventions around the same time. While the telephone was invented in 1870, the first commercial telephone exchange was established on June 11, 1876 in New Haven, Connecticut.
