  2. 2. •  Introduction Teacher, HoD, Principal in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town;•  Did all my studies, except my Teachers’ Diploma, on part-time basis;•  Was a part-time lecturer at the UWC from 5 years;•  Was founded and Executive member of SADTU since 1991 until 2001;•  Was the Director of SACE for 8 years;•  Designed the Executive Leadership Programme for Wits University in 2008;•  Extra-ordinary Senior Lecturer at University of Pretoria up until December 2010;•  Is immediate past president, and current vice-president of EMASA (Education Management Association of SA);•  Do consultancy work for UNICEF (Ethiopia), Commonwealth Secretariat (London), Sasol Inzalo Foundation, and numerous provincial, districts, circuits and school management teams in SA.•  Current research is focusing on (i) Turning around dysfunctional and underperforming schools, Managing teaching and learning (instructional and pedagogical content knowledge), and Systems research. 3 Orientation of the Module •  Module consists of 6 themes; •  Consultation hours: Monday 10h00 – 11h00; Tuesday 11h30 – 12h30; •  Consultation is by appointment only – write e-mail to muavia@mweb.co.za, and use EDU420 as reference; •  All slides will be available 24 hours after the lecture on www.slideshare.net (search “TUT EDU420”; •  Prescribed book: Oosterhuizen, I.J. Module Requirements•  You will write three Tests and one Assignment (from three topics), towards your Predicate Mark;•  All test will be written in class, on week after the completion of topic;•  All assignments will be due on 16 and 17 April (one week after the recess);•  Your predicate mark counts 50% towards your final module mark;•  You need a sub-minimum of 40% (20% of the 50%) to be able to sit for the examination;•  The examination (sometime late May or early June) counts for the other 50%, of which you also have to get a sub-minimum of 40% in order to pass the examination;•  Final module mark is a combination of your predicate mark and the examination mark;•  Only students who get between 45-48% in final mark, will qualify for the supplementary examination. 7 Theme 1 Education as a Profession 8 4
