Raising Kids with Character

  2. 2.  Parenting is delayed gratification • If you measure the success of your parenting by the short term wins and losses parenting can seem like a discouraging road. Ultimately, this about the future.  The key is consistency and follow through Not controlling your kids but teaching them to make wise choices.
  3. 3. “Train up a child in the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6
  4. 4.  Personalities play a part in character  Overall character is something that is taught
  5. 5. Academic Success Athletic Success Musical Ability Looks • Hard Work or Effort is a Character Trait (Doesn’t matter A or B did you give God your BEST)
  6. 6. Kindness Diligence Honesty Perseverance Attentiveness
  7. 7.  Pray for your child  Teach specifically  Model  Reward • With praise! • With prizes!
  8. 8.  Kindness • What is it? What does it look like?  Praise every time you possibly can  Have the word stay up around your class or home  You know they have it in their heart and head when…
  9. 9. In…. • Books • In your own speech and actions • In board games • In videos or TV shows
  10. 10.  It is cute now but will it be in 5 years, 10 years, as an adult?  Am I focusing on what is most important or what is most urgent?
  11. 11. •Our family is a Team! (Team Urban) •God and the four of us! • The Urbans always… give because we believe it is better to give than receive •The Urban’s always… go above and beyond what is expected. •WHAT ARE TRADITIONS are you using to build a team of character?
  12. 12.  It isn’t not about winning the game it’s about how we play the game. The effort is rewarded not the score
  13. 13.  Chores and responsibilities  Games  Not making excuses for them when someone tells you something your child did wrong
  14. 14.  Who is your closest neighbor? Your sibling!
  15. 15.  He washed the disciples’ feet  There is a humility that needs to be taught  Affirm what the world doesn’t
  16. 16.  J.O.Y. – Jesus First, Others Second, You Last  Everyone is a winner when they obey!  “A fool gives vent to his anger but a wise man keeps himself under control” Proverbs 29:11  “Be kind and loving to each other” Ephesians 4:32  “Do everything without complaining or arguing.” Philippians 2:14-16
