Lessons from Geese
Copyrighted
Sample
Angeles Arrien’s 1991 Organizational Development Network speech based on Milton Olson’s work & circulated to Outward Bound staff throughout the United States:
FACT 1: Each goose creates "uplift" for birds following; flying in a "V" formation adds 71% greater flying range to whole flock v alone
LESSON: People sharing a common direction & sense of community ‘git-er-dun’ quicker & easier traveling on each other’s thrust
13. 13. Lessons from Geese
Copyrighted
Sample
FACT 2: Out of formation alone = immediate drag & resistance...quickly moves back to take advantage of lifting power of another in front
LESSON: Have as much sense as a goose & stay in formation w/ those headed where we want to go…accept their help & give ours
FACT 3: When lead goose tires it rotates back & another flies to point position
LESSON: Trade-off & share leadership…we’re interdependent on others’ skills/capabilities/ unique arrangements of gifts/talents/resources
14. 14. FACT 4: Geese in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up speed
LESSON: Groups w/ encouraging honking = greater production…stand by one's heart/core values & encourage others’ heart/core values
FACT 5: Sick/wounded/shot goose = 2 geese follow to help protect it…staying until it dies/flies…then they catch up
LESSON: Are we as sensible as geese? Stand by each other in difficult times as times of strength
Lessons from Geese
Copyrighted
Sample
