  3. 3. THE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG THE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG IS A FRIENDLY AND INTELLIGENT BREED. THESE DOGS ARE TRAINABLE AND ARE ABLE TO FOLLOW COMPLEX AND CHALLENGING COMMANDS. PWD’S ALSO MAKE GREAT THERAPY DOGS FOR PEOPLE IN HOSPITALS DUE TO THEIR CALM TEMPERAMENT AND ADORABLE BEHAVIOUR. MALES ARE 20-22 INCHES AND WEIGHING AROUND 60 POUNDS, THE FEMALE BEING QUITE A LOT SMALLER RANGING FROM 18-20 INCHES AND ONLY WEIGHING AROUND 40 POUNDS. THIS DOG WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB IN 1983 AND WAS PUT IN THE WORKING BREED SECTION FOR ITS JOBS DONE IN PORTUGAL. THE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG IS MOST FAMOUS FOR ITS HYPOALLERGENIC “HAIR” MEANING ,MUCH LIKE THE POODLE, THE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG’S “HAIR” DOESN’T CAUSE PEOPLE WITH DOG ALLERGIES TO SNEEZE, COUGH OR HAVE ALLERGY SYMPTOMS.   6. 6. ORIGINS AS YOU CAN TELL, THE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG CAME FROM THE COAST OF PORTUGAL WHERE FISHING WAS A BIG RESOURCE AND A POPULAR WAY FOR MAKING MONEY. THESE DOGS WHERE BRED TO RETRIEVE NETS OR FALLEN ITEMS FROM THE BOATS SO FISHERMAN WOULD NOT LOOSE THEIR EQUIPMENT. LATER ON, WHEN TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED THESE DOGS ALMOST WENT EXTINCT MAINLY BECAUSE THEY HAD NO USE ANYMORE OTHER THEN TO BE HOUSE PETS. BUT A DOCTOR FROM PORTUGAL NOTICED THE DOGS DISAPPEARANCE AND THEN WANTED TO SAVE THE DOG. BREEDERS FOR THE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG INCREASED AND THE POPULATION OF THIS DOG WAS SOON RECOVERED AND STABLE. NOW AT 2013, THIS DOG IS A POPULAR HOUSE PET AS WELL AS THERAPY DOG.
  7. 7. Portuguese Water Dog CLOSE RELATIVES OF THE PWD THE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG RESEMBLES A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT BREEDS. THIS IS BECAUSE THE PWD IS SAID TO BE ONE OF THE WORLDS ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTORS TO TODAYS DOG RACE. THE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG HAS THE MOST RESEMBLANCE TO A POODLE, SO CLOSE THAT PEOPLE EVEN MISTAKE THE TWO! PORTUGUESE WATER DOGS ARE ALSO CLOSE RELATIVES OF A VARIETIES OF RETRIEVERS, KERRY BLUE TERRIERS AND THE SPANISH WATER DOG. Curly coated Retriever Poodle Kerry Blue Terrier Spanish Water dog
  8. 8. MY DOG THIS IS MY DOG BAXTER, AND HE IS A MALE PORTUGUESE WATER DOG. HE IS QUITE SHORT FOR A MALE AND IF HE WOULD PARTAKE IN DOG SHOWS HE WOULD ONLY JUST MAKE THE HEIGHT LIMIT. HE WEIGHS AROUND 55-60 POUNDS. HAS A GOOD PERSONALITY AND IS ABLE TO DO A VARIETY OF TRICKS. IT’S THE SAME DOG IN BOTH OF THESE PICTURES EXCEPT IN THE DARKER BROWN DOG PICTURE, HE IS YOUNGER AND AS HE GOT OLDER, HIS HAIR GOT LIGHTER.
